The damage may already of been done but I'm offering a suggestion that may just help reduce tensions between message boards in future. Why do people post from behind a "user name" rather that their own name. I'm convinced most of the comments that have caused issues in the past would not have been said but for the fact that people think it's ok nobody knows who I am. Of course someone will point out that I am doing the same. I will look to rectify that as soon as I work out how to.

Surely everybody knows who most people are these days?

I can hold my head up and say I have posted with the one name I’ve used since I signed up for rivals on in about 2001 across any Pools or football forums probably to my detriment  But people are posting on Facebook these days going over the same shite using their own profiles.

It’s gone way beyond forums and the Internet sadly.

I don’t who you are actually reveal yourself!!?

I'm dibble.

Also using the same name I began with ages ago. Think everyone knows me like.

Back in the olden days before the internet when I submitted my first article for Monkey Business, the late, great, Paul Mullen told me he could only print it if I had a pseudonym. I asked why I couldn't just use my own name, and he said it was for my own protection in case " I got decked by anyone with a cob on " or the football club decided to sue him. The old solicitors letters were a far more common threat back in those days apparently.

We were on a train at the time going to some far flung place no doubt, and he said to me to use the first name I could think of. He had a tabloid in front of him, there was a story about a gas explosion in a fish and ship shop in Yorkshire and the headline was "Chip Fireball" so we just used that.

I am sure there are people that do perhaps hide behind a username, but I think most of the ones that have been on the boards a long time pretty much everyone knows who they are. I also think there are people ( particularly on Facebook ) who use their real names anyway, and post a lot of abuse, but do it in places where they are comfortably in the majority and are unlikely to be challenged.

I sometimes get sent links to that FB Page and read some of the stuff on there and it seems like a super extreme version of what this place used to be like. I am shocked when people say they are offended by stuff posted in here . I don't read it religiously like I used to, but a lot of it is just about what people are having for tea, or what socks they are wearing or what they watched on television the night before.

It’s bizarre how serious this place is to some people.

I’ve probably done more posts on here about Morrisons self service tills than anything else. It’s clearly not a place that takes itself seriously.

People who don’t post on here seem to be constantly outraged by posts on here.

It’s like taking a daily marsh article seriously.

We are all dibble man! All of us.

I used to be monkeyhanger66 but then somebody signed up as monkeyhanger1966. So I changed it to Joe mac.. which is what I'm known as in the real world. My photo has been posted on here a few times as well. But yeah some people take things far too seriously.

Checking this place is a way of life for some people, more so for people who claim to hate it strangely.

Not sure how they would cope if it ever ceased to exist.

People actually screenshot this sort of shit as well and put it on other sites. So weird and sad.

I feel I have to confess that I was born in Hartlepool, not Toulouse. Everything else I have ever said on here is gospel though. Honest.

I think a lot of people know me from when I was editor of Monkey Business, but if not then my name is John Cooper and when I was younger a lass in a dark nightclub once told me I looked a bit like Sean Bean.

Hiding behind a username is not something I’ve ever considered I’m doing by posting on here.

Loads of people on here know me. I’ve played footy with them. I’ve went to games with them. I’ve drank with them. I’ve sold Footy shirts to a few. I’ve worked with a few. I’ve been yellow carded by a couple.

Guys on other forums know me. People have my phone number. Clearly the lovely Facebook people know me.

Hiding behind a name is not something I’m doing on here.

It’s only hiding if no one knows who are you are.

Ps John you look nothing like Sean bean

Thanks for that informative post, Chip; very interesting. And what a great way to chance upon a username! I had wondered if "Chip" had a footie connection but obviously not. I, for my part ...............

Like you, Yubep, I've had a bellyache or six on here regarding the way shops, trains etc. (and the reliance on technology in particular) are coining it in at our expense. Far from the situation improving, things seem to be getting even worse and I regularly get refunds after being overcharged. But why should it have to be like this? Almost certainly because of my earlier point that we now exist in a society where the majority seem to just accept things as being correct and few bother to check till receipts etc. As if the cost of living isn't high enough already.

I’m the same as Chip in a way, stuck with the name I used a few times when I wrote into Monkey Business, and the one I picked just followed the style of many of the other user names at the time I just used Paul Dalton as inspiration (my fave player at that point).

A few people on here know who I am but I’m nowhere near as famous or well known as people like Yubep as I do t frequent the self service tills in any well known supermarket brand in Hartlepool right now

All this fame isn’t what it’s cracked up to be. Only so many till receipts you can sign.

All sorts of people spying on other people these days, like employers etc. That's why pseudonyms aren't a bad thing. I'll be damned if people are going to find out my real name.

I'm absolutely destroyed here.

A lot of people said I had a resemblance to Lee Bullock when he played for us.

And a few weeks ago a lass at work said I reminded her of Jamie Oliver. That's probably the worst of all, I detest that Mockney twat. I do have a massive fat tongue like.

There won't be a single person on here who knows me even if I told you my name.

My surname isn't Shilton either.

I prefer to hide and keep my identity a mystery so I can continue to be a 'lovely lovely person' on here without fear of retribution.

Thanks

My kids are too old for soft play now, shame cos I used to love taking them.

Was Bullock kind of hanging about and not really taking part? Like he was on the pitch?

Hello. I'm Montpoolier. I had no choice over the name, being a Poolie who lived in Montpellier for a canny few years.
The name is now however fraudulent.
All the people I care about on this board have met me with the exception of Grabec, so my real name is pretty irrelevant (I hope nobody steals that idea and makes a pseudonym out of it).

I confess, I am the REAL Bishop of the Metropolis, hence the username.

My only problem with this site is these days there is far too much about Hartlepool United, the TRUST and the owners. This site IMHO was always about self serve checkouts, whose driving on the A19, bread, takeaways, and Dibble etc. We demand the old days back.

PS If honesty is the best policy, then I admit I hold a season ticket for a Big Team (Pools are my second team).

I used to be Albatross, which is a name I picked long ago, ironically given the original post, because when I posted on the original Pools message board (the joint ITN/Ben TFP/Frode's Pools Stats one) about 20 years ago, I used my own name and some kind person started impersonating me.... it reached the point when I was scribbling notes at away games for Pools Online (as was) that people would say to me, "Are you Albatross?" so more people probably know me as that than my real name..... however it was definitely time for a change, and having got the hump and deliberately scrambled my password I had a break for a while before re-emerging in this guise. So long as people aren't being deliberate keyboard warriors and hiding behind an alias to do it, I don't have a problem with people using whatever name they like!

Yes as you can see that's exactly what I said letter for letter.

There are plenty of other people I'd like to meet. But to care about them requires a little bit more than liking a lot of their posts. They know me on the board and on here it's Montpoollier.

Jeeezus Snowy I wasn't expecting the Spanish inquisition.
