Sweeney was right back in this game:

But Robson came on as a sub for Monkhouse so can't be certain he played full back.

The last time I can definitely recall it happening was Tuesday 1st October 1974 when Jimmy Shoulder and Rob Smith both scored in a 3-2 loss at Cambridge. Shoulder had a rare knack of scoring direct from corners, which he managed to do a few times.

I suspect a few might chuck in Barrie Stimson and Phil Brown in a game at Stockport in the early 80's. Mr Elvis might be the man to ask here, because I have a nagging feeling that while Stimmo definitely started left back, Brown was playing as an emergency striker that game, rather than his normal full back role.

Bloody hell Chip, with powers of retention like that you should go on Mastermind.

I remember seeing Jimmy Shoulder score direct from a a corner in a home game, but would have no clue what game it was without looking it up. To be honest, I'd have struggled to tell you 6 months after the game, never mind 43 years on!

It was a long time ago, even I wouldn't put my mortgage on it. Very possible he could of done it twice, as he took a mean corner kick, that either curled straight into keepers hands or onto the head of Moore or Mcmahon. The Sunday game was because of the 3 day week, energy shortage due to miners strike and war between Israel and Arabs disrupting supply of Oil. Some clubs played later on in the year played games on a weekday afternoon because of it.

As far as I can recall Pools played 4 home games on a Sunday in 1974 v Stockport, Mansfield, Workington and Doncaster and one away at Gillingham.

Who was the last player to get 3 assists in a game before last night John?

Checked my programme collection and the Shoulder inswinger I saw was indeed the Sunday Doncaster game. Kick-off 2.45!

I made George Potter Man of the Match.

There was naff all in the programme in those days; the only articles were Ashurst's Angle and a syndicated column about the First and Second Divisions from the Daily Mail.

The again, it only cost 6p!

Strangely enough they won al 4 of those Sunday home games, convincingly as well, 3-0 4-0 3-0 3-0. That was a decent side that season. If Ashurst hadn't went to Gillingham and took Gauden with him, reckon we could of went up the following season.

The whole concept of the assist is a strange one really.

I mean, last touch before the goalscorer's touch? Apart from the fact that an 'assist' doesn't differentiate between a hit and hope punt towards the box and a mazy dribble to the by line followed by a pinpoint cross, how many potential 'assists' are fluffed by a player who misses an open goal?

How many potential assists did Denis Behan chalk off?

Pretty sure the other two home games in the 80's were moved in an attempt to see if attendances improved. We certainly flirted with Friday night games a few times. I know in 1986 the then Thatcher Government tried to get an act through Parliament to allow shops to open on a Sunday which was defeated ( young folk may be surprised to learn that there was a time when everything wasn't permanently open ) so I think that may have been an influence.

It was certainly the first time in history that I can recall there being people openly talking about allowing people to do things on a Sunday other than go to Church.

I remember that as a decent game Chip, Darlo scored in last minute. Was played on a Sunday purely down to police advice I reckon. Was start of the days when the police started to dictate kick off times. Remember Darlo coming onto Mill House terraces from Town End side and giving it their best shot  game young lads, but were soon surrounded and after a brief flurry of punches , retreated back into Town End which they had the whole end, first time they ever had anything like 2000 up, since I had started going in 1971.

Swindon game in 85 was at request of Pools, to save money. We had played at Exeter the day before, I was at both, about 50 of us at Exeter , about 12 at Swindon, Swindon was 1030am kick off. We lost both games 3-2 and 2-1 probably part of the deal  both to last minute goals , which was typical of 80s and 90s. I had a ticket to watch Norwich v Sunderland in the league cup final but went to watch pools instead, the last 100,000 attendance at Wembley , but it must of been 99.999 as I never went.

Yep, and also the FA Cup games at Hereford (1999) and Port Vale (2016), and at home to Southport (1992), Millwall (1999) and Stamford (2016)

clappp Stamford forgot about that, possibly the most low key home match in our history
