The first ever star I knew off in pools team when I first started going around 1971. Great player for Carlisle when they achieved the impossible and reached the old 1st Division after last gasp promotion in 1973/74 season.

Notice Carlisle say they paid 10k for him, while I always thought we got 15k, make of that what you will, surely not pools telling us porkies again  These days of course it would be an undisclosed fee

I'm sure it was £10,000, but you never know.
Tall and gangly and a bit raw when he played for us but he knew where the ball was. Oh for the likes of someone like that now.
The fact we recall his time here is testament to the impact he made. How old was he?

I remember him well - one of our greatest centre-halfs i'd say. Interesting to hear he was scouting for Southampton as well - must have been good at his job given the money they have made out of transfers in recent times.

Sad news, bit of a hero in the first Pools team I can really remember properly. Good footballer and a decent bloke by all accounts.

R.I.P Bill, cracking no nonsense centre half. A regular at pools until very recently in CK stand

I remember Bill Green and echo all above sentiments. When Carlisle reached the old first division and went top wasn't it Bill Green who scored their first match winner away to Chelsea? Could be wrong but pleased to be corrected. RIP Bill one who really put his head in for Hartlepool FC back then.

Like a few others who have posted, Bill Green was an early favourite of mine in Len Ashurst's Pools side and it's a shock to hear that he's passed.

Oddly, one of my strongest memories of him was him coming out for the start of a Boxing Day match looking very much the worse for wear (checked with ITMC and it was against Bradford City). Given it was the 1970s, probably half the team was in a similar condition, but Bill looked ready to barf. Anyhow, also typical of the times, he pulled himself together and played alright in a win!
