Take into account insurance cost...He's bound to get his eyes ripped out.

Our youngest bought a Honda Prelude at 18, it's longer than a small bus  was only 300 more than a Corsa to insure though.

Start with the insurance group and work back.

When I first passed the little hatches were more expensive to insure than a normal car. Maybe look at a focus or something.

Bought our lass a shitty little Clio for £500 when (Elvis' dad got her through her test) it does the job for her although she wants a Fiat 500 now for some reason.

Id always start driving in a shit heap tbh. (Maybe cos I crashed the day after I passed me test like) and as they say - you only start learning how to drive after you pass your test.

Avoid a Corsa.

Get something that has a very small engine and fairly undesirable. Exactly what he won't want.

A Corsa would be a very bad move. Their reputation in the insurance world is very poor with young drivers.

If you can get insurance quotes under 2k you're doing well. Get quotes before buying the car and make sure one of his parents is a named driver as this will save you a few hundred quid.

Japanese cars are pretty sturdy. Honda Jazz and particularly the Toyota YARIS. You have to consider the benefits of something slightly bigger though, more car around you if something goes wrong. Focus was a good shout, reliable and so many of them about that parts (new or scrap) are dirt cheap.

Age plays a huge part.

21 is a decent-ish age so I'd expect premiums around what you're saying especially if she has a couple+ years bonus. If she hasn't got any bonus and recently passed her test, then that premium is extraordinarily good.

17yr olds get hammered.

My mates son just passed his test and has been checking Cars and insurance out. Like has been said earlier avoid the Corsa (popular boy racers car) as the insurance will be crippling. Also make sure the car is factory spec as again the insurance will hammer kids for any add ons/modifications. Definately add a parent (with a clean licence ) as that will save a good few hundred quid (depending on the car).

Oh Mr Verbal do a check on the car before you buy it. There is a site where you can pay £5 for a check and £20 gets you 5 or 6 checks. My mate paid the fiver. The car checked was down as having stolen number plates and had been an insurance write off. I suppose it pays in the long run to do your homework.

Toyota Yaris every time . Cheap to buy . Spares are cheap as out on eBay and insurance friendly - avoid the T sport or SR as the insurance will be too high. Plenty around on eBay etc so you can be choosy. Beauty of the Yaris, well built and chain driven VVTi engine is ultra reliable and goes on for miles.

try the insurance for a number of cars before you buy one. may take hours to do but worth it in the end. there are shocks to be had out there good and bad as far as insurance is concerned.

It's worth looking into insurance companies that fit a "black box" that monitors their driving.
Daughters car - 1.2 64 plate Vauxhaul Adam, 17yr old just passed test, me and her mam as named drivers. £1200 fully comp.

Supposed to get rid of a micra two years ago when we bought a new car. I kept it for going to work and a runaround. It's an 08 reg from new,120,000 on the clock and just goes and goes. Last test only needed new front brake pads, so putting it in again till it dies. Got attached to it now while the new one lounges about on the drive like the pampered child.

I think you've misread that...he said 'me and her mam as named drivers' so presumably the daughter is the policy holder so she will earn the bonus.

Talbot Samba!! Was nearly my first car as a bloke at work was selling his but I couldn't afford it....I think he only wanted 200 quid!

Yeah, that's right. Insurance is in her own name, not only to get her no claims but also insurance companies are, apparently, looking to clamp down on parents "fronting" policies for their kids cars.
