Hope he's ok Mutley.

Sadly things like waiting hours for an ambulance are normal now because 'we're all in it together' or something.

I hope he's okay Mr Mutley.

Alas it's the systems fault. A while ago my Dad was ill and the paramedic had to come from Weardale!

Sorry to hear that Mutley

Dad broke his femur last year.

7 hour wait for the ambulance

It's the dispatchers not the crew. The paramedics were fuming dad had to wait so long. Needed a fire engine crew to help carry him down the stairs.

Whilst I don't agree with it if he did not look too bad I would have put him in the car and taken him there.

They just can't cope at the moment,i could give you a long list of failures with us having to look after our ageing parents atm..it's a shame for the hard working NHS staff as well.

What is happening to the NHS is nothing short of criminal. The greedy bastads who will profit from its demise should have all their limbs broken and be made to wait on a trolley in a corridor indefinitely.

Nothing against the great NHS....but why in this country....the founders of the greatest National Health Service on the planet....do people have to wait 3/4 hours for an ambulance???? sctatchinghead

I think there's an evil little thing called "Efficiency" at the root of this sort of thing...

The problem is who chooses what definition of Efficiency to use. For most of use who use the NHS, what we want is a service that can see us quickly and treat us well, when we need it - especially when it's an urgent case. However, financially, this is not efficient - because if someone is ready to see you in half an hour, if you hadn't seen them they would potentially be paid for sitting twiddling their thumbs.

Instead, a financial model of efficiency demands that the best use of expensive resources be made by having them constantly busy. So for example with GPs - if people have to wait three weeks to get an appointment, you know that every moment that they're available they are working - much less "waste", even more when you think that those who have minor conditions are not going to bother. More bang per buck. The same can be said of consultants, and to a lesser degree Paramedics and Ambulances - though there, the negative consequences and publicity mean that it's better to at least have some slack in the system. Even so, the lack of connected thinking has an effect - hospitals with targets to meet queuing up ambulances with patients, as that way the clock doesn't start ticking meaning they have more chance of hitting the mark, but that means longer waits for the ambulance to arrive; at the other end, patients blocking beds because the councils can't/won't afford the home care needed to allow patients to be discharged home.

It's happening all over the place. Last year, a woman broke her hip outside her sheltered housing in a village; because she wasn't in excruciating pain, and the weather was OK, she ended up on the ground for six hours before an ambulance reached her - the Warden (who I know) did his best to make her comfortable, and kept ringing, but a lot of the ambulances were queued outside the Maelor Hospital in Wrexham waiting to discharge patients, meaning that the only ones available kept getting diverted to urgent cases (chest pains etc) and she had to wait. No slack in the system is financially efficient - but in patient care terms it's running everything on a knife edge....
