Newcastle had a penalty, Matt Richie stepped up and scored the referee disallowed it with no retake and the game restarted with a Burton free a yard to the side of the penalty spot!?

WTF!!? What could that be for? Some are saying 'offside' eh!? Surely it can only be if he touched the ball more than once?

Just heard disallowed because Gayle fouled a Burton player after penalty awarded but before penalty kick was taken and its at refs discretion.............according to radio Newcastle anyway.

Just one of lots of theories though

Just read it was because of the stuttered run up

That is impossible the ball is dead as soon as the infringement has taken place that resulted in the penalty. Or are they saying it was as Richie ran up? That seems highly unlikely and it's a retake within the laws surely?

I think they are saying it's because he did a 'John Aldridge' stutter but even then the referee has got it completely wrong. In the new rules it's a yellow card for Richie and a retake you can't just disallow a penalty!

Apparently he can dance disallow the penalty if it's either kicked backwards or he feigns in the striking of the ball, you can stutter in your run up!

As clear as mud!!

Disallowed penalty update: Common opinion in the press box is that a there was a foul on the edge of the box as Ritchie stepped up #brewers

****Apparently play is considered active during the run up.!! ****

The referee has issued an apology. The infringement was Dwight Gayle encroaching in the area.

Everybody knows that is a re-take how the fook does a referee not!? Did the fact this sort of thing has never happened before not cross his mind as he giving the free kick!?

Utterly bizarre

Didn't he notice 3 Burton players in the box the same time as Gayle?

Too true, ever since the Tories got back in their masterplan to marginalise anything that doesn't exist within a fifty mile radius of the capital has swung into action.

For it to succeed they require Sunderland, Boro, Hull or Swansea to be relegated from the Prem, Blackburn, Wigan and Rotherham from the championship, Bury, Oldham, Chesterfield and Shrewsbury from Lg.1, and us and Newport from Lg.2.
Then the pampered elite can all get to their respective games within half n hour of kick-off/finish and not miss their cocktail fuelled nightclubs on an evening that us rabble couldn't even afford the entry fee into.

The worst thing with this is, what f...k are the other 3 officials looking at. If neither of the two lino's nor the 4th official who I presume are all qualified officials, can say to the ref via microphone 'according to the rules I think you got that wrong, need to Change your your decision' then what is their purpose. If they cannot give an opinion on a decision made by the ref then they are a waste of space and money. It looks like refs seem to be untouchable on the pitch, what I say goes!!!!!

All 4 rightly kicked off games this weekend.

I see it was the guy from Hartlepool was 4th Official.

As Chip says, what on earth were they talking about? Do we have to presume all 4 of them didnt know the rule? Or were the other 3 just afraid to disagree with the ref for some reason?

Will never know I guess. Utterley bizzare.

Just seen it and it was a soft penalty to start with. Also there were several Burton players in the box, none of them or Gayle affected the penalty so common sense could of been applied. However the fact an official didn't know the rules for something that happens reasonably frequently is baffling. Mistakes happen and can be excused but this isn't just a mistake. Do refs not sit regular exams or owt? Imagine if Brighton won the league by 1 goal, could be interesting.

Refs, 2 linesman and a 4th official, none of whom intervened to apply the rule. Beggars belief.
