Why do Sunderland use the "A" when most other clubs don't? Always wondered that.

Because, despite it being pronounced Sunderlnd, it's always been spelled that way. As for the Association Football bit I'm not sure why they use it. I suppose it helps define what they're playing as football rather than rugby.
