Tax inspectors surely?

Maybe with a radio or something else they can wind up.

What about the old footymail docker gadge? Or is that too stereotypical of back in the day Hartlepool? Would look good though.

Hey offshore, monkeys would be the obvious choice but yeah you're right. After the threats over blackened faces at Carlisle can you imagine the furore if the monkeys descended on Cheltenham? Irate from wherever writing in The Guardian and The I etc.

Might have to wear a Crystal Palace shirt one half and a Pools for the second. To really be poor old Lawrence the politically correct people would I suspect again have a field day in protest.

Towards the end wasn't he regularly seen in full Chelsea strip - like John Terry.

Yeah you're right he was. He was originally though a Palace fan and came over to us after Bob Newton won a new suit and stuffed them 2-1 up the Town End in front of 4 thousand of their fans including Terry Venables. Went on the pitch after that game up to The Town End and they were stunned. Twice we've beat them in the cup but back to Lawrence. A tortured soul who came over to us and the abuse around town he received was well known. My most vivid memory of him was those bloody awful '70s long boots that Dave Hill of Slade wore. Oh dear. Rest in peace Lawrence there in spirit with us at Cheltenham second last game. Hey just had a thought! Anybody know what Cheltenham Town's club badge is about? A jester's hat? Lawrence lives on. Go with jesters hats on. Might have to escape with police escort from Gloucestershire though.

Its not PC to think a blacked up face is unacceptable, its basic human decency.

Mr 2-0, can you explain why you think anybody would object to people dressing up as monkeys when they support a club that has a monkey as a mascot? How could you end up imagining that anybody would have a problem with that? I'm genuinely interested in knowing because it just sounds like ridiculous shit stirring to me.

Hey people, no shit stirring on my part. Just taking part in a fun debate with interest. I can see no probs with Pools going as monkeys if they wish but alas I was referring to the left brigade who actually look for what they see as racist and I can picture certain publications etc actually stirring it up with a racism card. The Poolies at Carlisle should all have darkened their faces in tribute to Bob Marley but we know was the furore was when there was a hint of doing this. Hope I've made my position clear on what was a fun discussion.

It would have been a fitting tribute to Bob Marley though I am fairly sure that's how it would have been perceived.

I like the idea of a fancy dress tribute to the black and white minstrel show.

But there again, I like the idea of poolies wearing pools shirts even more.

Of course it would. The thing is, blackfacing is poisoned now and can no longer be used even sensibly. It's as dead as the word Gay.
And with monkey gestures being (rightly) poisoned at footy games, you can bet your life some SJW or another will come along and extend their monkey thinking from gestures to outfits.

edit: SJW = social justice warrior; not sure if that meme has reached 'Artlepool yet.

Thanks PJ Poolie. Exactly that a fitting tribute to Bob Marley whose skin was a bit darker than mine on account of where in the world he was born. Descriptive not racist. If you're gonna tribute Bob Marley then look a bit like him. Don't think for one minute he would have minded. Have to say it wasn't me who suggested the Bob Marley theme. Personally I would like the Poolies to go as the old Footy Mail docker character. Oh dear I hear the abuse now about how Hartlepool has moved on from all that etc. Hang on when HUFC was formed there would have been people around like him. C'mon Poolies. A fun discussion lets have some more ideas if you can think of any. Love Chip's posts but disagree about end of season fancy dress celebrations for failure yet again. We're Poolies and always have been able to have a laugh at ourselves and we are nationally known now for this behaviour so can't we all celebrate it. Up until the last few games there have been precious little to celebrate.

I might be in the minority on here but I like the fancy dress thing. For starters its one of the few ways in which the national media show us in a positive light. It's also a good laugh. I'm looking forward to taking my kids to Cheltenham (provided we're safe by then) as they will love it and hopefully it will abother step to them becoming brainwashed Poolies.

Hi Mr Bishop I hear you. Maybe I didn't explain my views too well. Yeah i have kids lighter skinned than me who is darker due to ancestors, too much sun at Fish Sands, and Crimmer when younger but you know what I'm saying? I'm with Poolie in Nottingham let's have a good laugh. If I could find an afro the size of Dorset I would go as George Berry. Older Poolies will remember him from Cambridge and Wolves day. Great player and even greater afro. Not sure though if the afro would fit under the Poolie gadge's flat cap.

Every year this debate seems to come up. Those who want to dress up do, and those who don't want to dress up just seem to moan about those who do.
Can we just agree to differ and then move on rather than have this annual FDE debate.
For me, I think it's a great idea - but would like it to be a celebration for promotion rather than just keeping our heads above water which it has been for the last few years now.

Oh- and I wasn't really being serious about Burkhas!!! :character-smurfguy:

You seriously don't think this is an actual debate do you Geoff? It's just piss taking, that begins from about this point every season and lasts up until the day. Nobody is actually being serious here. One of the funniest aspects is always how serious and cloak and dagger grown men take playing dressy up.

On the day it's always positive press for the club though and well received by all, unless one year we do go as the SS or something.

I doubt the pro fancy dressers are in the minority, I expect the grumpy old men are the minority so shouldn't it be the GOME and the FDU (fancy dress unelite). There is probably a word for unelite.
