My new job offer is in front of me and part of it is the company car. I have a lease allowance through Lex of £740 a month. As a comparison, my current C Class 220d is a lease car (billed to the company not me) and its £420 a month plus small change. This pretty much means that the choice is limitless within reason but obviously company car tax is a consideration.

I reckon that a tax bill of up to 3k a year is worth it to have the car that I want but over that I will shy away. I can't have coupe's cabriolet's and an SUV's is out too unless it's a hybrid.

At the moment I'm leaning towards a Merc E Classe 300e or the BMW X5e. The hybrid in both cases reduce the tax bill substantially albeit at a cost in performance. I can also trade up or down 25%. Trading up is just daft as the type of cars at that level would be just silly.

Any sensible suggestions? My only caveat is that is needs to pull a caravan. Yes I know, but I'm at that age.

Greedy get.

Get 4 cars at just under 200 quid a month and gift the other 3 to your mates.

I've always liked you Mr I, for the record.

You could get a lovely Ford Granada 2.8 Ghia in brown with a contrast beige vinyl roof trim.

What about the new Jaguar XJ. Look fantastic and the big diesel one has loads of torque for caravan towing

I've just looked at the XF. Trouble is a Jag with a caravan on looks so so wrong.

Might I suggest you buy a few properties on Belk Street, I have it on good authority you'll be able to sell them at a profit in the immediate future. My sauce is connected to a local football club and looking to get into the luxury end of crack den development.

PS, ref the car. How about a BMW 330e? Mate has one and looks smart and is freakishly quiet.

I'm getting an E Class AMG next week, just the standard one though. Had one on hire a while back and it was great car to drive. Changing from a BMW 320d M Sport, which is also a nice car to drive.

I was given a BMW M Sport as a courtesy car when a very kind man decided to write my car off. It was meant to be a like for like for my car.....errrmmmm....yeah right, it had absolutely nothing to do with them screwing the insurer at all.

Oh yes and it was ideal for the wintery, snowy conditions at the time. Really handy to have all the power at the back and all the weight at the front. Poor.

The standard E Class AMG? The E63?

You're calling an E63 AMG 'standard'? sctatchinghead

I used to have to an SL55 AMG and that was, in no way, a standard SL

Modern cars are all dreary "sporty" shite that, for some reason, resemble bits of military hardware. There's a new Lexus 4X4 monstrosity that looks like it has been pre-crashed and would look very much at home in downtown Mosul. Whatever happened to elegance and class? It's now all get out of my fucking way, pimped up, bling. My advice, get one of those armoured gunship monstrosities Trump is currently preening himself in - might come in handy very soon.

For some reason, style is associated with a car on steroids. Sorry, but they're just white goods to me that get me from A to B economically and start every time.

Just imagining you travelling down the A1 at 80mph on a 1970s chest freezer. Pools dut to keep warm.

Chest freezers are OK for cross country stuff, but motorway driving is best done in a tumble drier. Tried it on a twin tub years ago but they can be very unpredictable.

E220 AMG.
Standard as in standard spec, none of the extras like the wide display etc.

The E220 AMG appears to have a very small gear knob, confirming my thoughts about drivers of German cars. It does however appear to have a stick on the side of the steering column that is reminiscent of an indicator stick. What it's purpose on a German motor is I'm not sure.

Now I see the source of the confusion.

The E220 AMG's not a proper AMG. It has AMG styling (like you can get M sport styling on a BMW 3 or 5 series but that doesn't make them an M3 or M5).

The E63 AMG is north of £80k, hence my surprise at seeing your nonchalant reference to it as being 'standard'

Arriva are generally very reliable and occasionally on time. Not a bad price too. Hope this helps.

find a low mileage pre cat motor without all the electrics which go wrong as soon as its out of the showroom, tyres the size of a van with a style that isn,t a jellymould or an armed escort vehicle then your o.k. peugeot 309 diesel does for me and you,ll still get caught by speed camaras.

A pal of mine has the 507 edition of the E63 AMG. It is ridiculous.

TBF quite often there is a Macdonalds voucher on the back, which I, being generous give my used tickets to my mates teenage daughter to share with her mates. Ergo if I ate at Macdonalds everyday I would travel on the bus for free????? FTR I don't do Macdonalds!

Have you had a look at the Mazda 6 Mr I.

Very good car and will tow a caravan, also the VW Passat CC is really good and has lots of torque for towing
