Don't the BBC do these scare documentaries before every World Cup?

Everyone was getting robbed and murdered in Brazil weren't they?

Imagine you'd have gone to South Africa before that as well and been car jacked robbed raped and murdered?

After what happened in the Euros, I doubt many would be keen on going anyway. The tournament will still go ahead though as Sepp has spent the bribery money on defending his innocence.

It will probably the safest time that you could ever visit Russia.

Like in Brazil and South Africa s hit loads of police armed with machine guns normally put off petty criminals and fans of toe to toe. I think even normally Russian hooligans go off and fight each other in secluded areas like forests as they know that they have police and higher authorities that don't fuck about. Putin will probably have most of them killed anyway before the tournament in case they show Russia in a bad light. To be honest if you're prepared to travel to Russia and go out into the woods to fight a load of nut jobs you deserve what you get.

Scare documentaries are a staple pre World Cup. I remember hearing that during the Brazil World Cup local people were going out in Rio wearing jewellery and in expensive clothes something they can never normally do because of the constant Police presence.

I'll be living in Moscow from August for the next two years at least. Better start practicing my Russian....

In all seriousness, PJ's last post is spot on. Anything that could embarrass Putin like that won't be tolerated. I read somewhere that even one of the hooligan leaders said come the World Cup they'll all likely be locked up for the duration as the State will take a hard line.

The Russian governmental system won't want to be embarrassed with the eyes of the world on them. They'll be well aware of the potential issues and they'll already be making plans. The concept of alpha male is integral to the Russian psyche and that will be accounted for. The vast majority of these ultras and organised fighting 'wings' will already have been 'advised' not to step out of line by the authorities.

Whilst they would normally turn a blind eye in favour of maintaining the Russian concepts of machismo and elite militarism, whilst the World Cuo is on, they won't be as eager to have these brawls in the full glare of the media.

Putin's goons will already have sat down with these groups and discussed this. The vast majority will stay in line and maintain the party advice. As for those who step out of line, they'll have been warned that they face getting seven shades of faecal matter kicked out of them by the local police if they can't behave; just the same as will inevitably happen when Barry Brit decides to lob garden furniture around.

These guys won't take prisoners.

It will probably be the safest World Cup in history as a result.

Worst event I heard of/saw in Brazil was an English fan having his ear bitten off by...an England fan!

While the Russian hooligans might have a fierce reputation, the Russian police and Military won't piss about when their countries reputation is at stake. There may be isolated incidents but I suspect there will be less than in France.

I cant be the only one that has no sympathy with Ingurland fans wasting all that money to watch our bag of shite, whilst draping themselves in the Union Jack, which isnt even the flag of Ingurland.

And singing songs about the second world war.

The fact its in Russia might just mean these morons dont embarrass the nation by not being there.

A mate from work went to the World Cup in South Africa as his brother lives out there. One night some people broke into the house and held them all at gunpoint, all they took were football tickets, passports and money. It's fair to say that he was a bit of a state when he got back to work

South Africa is fairly s hit scary place to live. Most people with any money have to live in estates that are completely fenced off and have round the clock security. Loads of people go on holiday there though and the tourist areas are generally safe if you keep your wits about you. I know a lad who is from Rio and he says you can't leave the house displaying any outward signs of wealth or you'll just get mugged, my mate was mugged at knifepoint there as well. Without a doubt though the safest time to visit these places would be during the World Cup. Like I said earlier person I spoke to from Brazil said that during the World Cup people were going out dressed smartly with watches on and everything  I'm sure it will be the same in Russia, if you are sensible and don't get off the beaten track. Nowhere wants to be portrayed in bad light during such a high profile and costly event to organise. I think the FA prefer tournaments a bit further afield because it prices a lot of our own pond life out of attending to make us proud singing 'ten German bombers' and 'No surrender to the IRA'

I love travelling me and am lucky enough to have seen a fair bit of World I hate scare stories and people living in fear of what might happen to them. You could be in the wrong place at the wrong time anywhere in the World.

My cousin married a South African and went to live there with him for a few years until they divorced. She said it was fookin horrible, living in gated communities and only being safe to walk in certain areas and so on. And when you come to traffic lights, you have to leave a huge gap between you and the car in front so you can drive forwards quickly if you get carjacked.

Hopefully things will improve there in time, but it doesn't sound much fun whether you're black or white for now.

Putin's big mates with the Russian biker gang 'The Night Wolves' and Steven Segal, so i don't see security being a problem.

I'm a school teacher who is now working on the international circuit. I've done four years in East Africa, and now I'm off to one of the top international schools in Russia. Quite a contrast.
