My missus thought it was odd that I put tins of corned beef in the fridge 1) as she hates the stuff and 2) why? The reason is its easier to cut when out of the tin but I also like tins of tuna in the fridge so its cold. She keeps Ketchup in the fridge but not brown sauce and just think thats a bit odd.

She is fussy anyway and wont eat nowt thats not British meat (when I same meat just chicken really as hates all other stuff) I cooked liver and onions the other day and she nearly threw up that I could eat it.

I have plenty of food hates, but nothing comes close to liver and onions. Horrible stuff. Serve it with sprouts for the ultimate in horrible eating.

Always keep a tin of corned beef in the fridge, slices like a dream when chilled, and it's easier to scrape the jeal and lard off the sides.

I buy corned beef already sliced, not in tins. I'm never sure what's in the stuff, but I like it so I eat it anyway.
But I always put tuna tins in the fridge. Warm tuna is minging.

Not a massive eater of corned beef but I think it's just mashed up cow shaped into whatever.

What I'm saying is, I don't think it's full of other, non-cow type stuff.

It's OK to put cans in fridge unless the can has been opened. Not sure what the difference is. Maybe a passing chemist gadgie can explain.

because when you go hunting for chocloate in the middle of the night and you eventually go to the fridge you may cut your finger on the edge of the opeded can.

Stop getting chocolate cravings in the night.

I should've been clearer :)

Cans yes, but tins?

Don't put tomatoes in the fridge either.

Best way to know what to put in the fridge is where it was when you bought it.

There wouldnt be if others had their way!!

Everytime I have a left over pizza slice etc, it gets nabbed. Hence me getting the safe.

I seem to remember a similar thread yonks ago. Some sciencey blokey reckoned tins are okay in the Fridge, but once opened the sciency metalic and chemical/ organically bio stuff reacts to something or other, so no metal tins open in the fridge, or the corned beef/ tuna whatever reacts and does something, which may cause death or worse! Probably.

I hope this wasn't too technical for some Bunkerites.

On the non technical side I put tins in the fridge, corned beef indeed does slice better, however due to the Bunker, once opened I do put any remaining contents into a bowl and cover with cling film before returning to the fridge. Tins/cans are then placed in the recycling bin.

Yes, that's it, Bishop. Something to do with the metal coming into contact with oxygen, once the can's open.

If you buy the more expensive tins of tomatoes, they are lined with a plastic coating, which allows them to be stored in the fridge until they go mouldy, just never get round to using them again!

I use half a tin of corned beef in a panaccalti, then wrap the leftover chunk in tin foil and put in it the fridge.

Am I going to die of corned beefitis?

Corned beef is war food so you could just as easily die from a Nazi gunshot wound.

Can you imagine a chicken kebab but without the chicken, naan/pitta,salad, garlic and chips, but a bowl of gravy with potato, carrot, corned beef and onions?

I spell it panaccalti because that's how they used to spell it at Kingsley school in the early to mid 1980s.

I think it gives it a bit of exotic glamour, like it might be Italian or something.

Panackelty is the agreed term isn't it?

People always try to link it with Pan Haggerty, it's unrelated. I know this as I did a project on it.

If the tin really does have a tin (Sn) coating, well, tin is allotropic, and below a certain temperature, whether the can is open or not, it changes to a different allotrope (generally call "tin pest"), and it's not the sort of thing you want in your system.

Do not put tin cans in the fridge.

Aluminium beer cans, on the other hand, should be stored in your fridge in unlimited quantities.

Well it's a lot closer than pannacalti. But actually it originated in Japan, where it is called パナキャルティー.

Thank you Mr Monty for putting what I said in a much less sciencey way, so some on here can understand, what is simple to us technical Brainiacs!

Yes, yes, that's it Mr Poolier.

Furthermore, there is some evidence somewhere that all tinned food whether in a fridge or not is to be avoided and, believe it or not, especially tinned tomatoes.

There is something very wrong when food and tin come into contact with each other.

Not good people.

Tins as a container of food will be non-existent at some point in the future.

You heard it here first.

Tins can go rusty in the fridge as the tin itself is not 100% pure tin, some tins have an internal coating nowadays, think that's to stop the contents reacting with tin because of all the dodgy preservatives in the contents.

Surely the whole point of canning/tinning is it preserves stuff without needing to refrigerate it? Once you open the fooker the seal is broken and you need to transfer it to a dish to put in the fridge. As long as the seal is sealed only a complete loon would put it in the fridge (unless they just like cold fish, ravioli, corned beef or whatever in which case fair enough).

PS Corned beef is just normal beef mixed with 2% scar material from cows' injured toes. FACT.

Oh and we keep 1 bottle of tomato sauce in the fridge and 1 in cupboard.

Personally I like the contrast of cold sauce on hot chips etc.

So where is the contrast there? Or does it middle out? Room temperature sauce on room temperature food?

Mayonnaise is in the fridge along with the brown sauce.
