Sadly I think the attendance will be around the 900 mark. They should've let this be a fans game like they do at the end of every season.

There was 2221 at our game last year and I can't see there being that many tonight but I'd be surprised if there is under 1000. I had a look on a Sunderland message board and some are talking about coming for the game; having said that they're complaining that £10 is expensive for a U23 team.

With Jermain Defoe leading the first team into a three-goal interval lead, the Black Cats sent out the young prospects for the second 45 minutes which ended goalless. “Hartlepool are a good team, a strong team, we played them in pre-season,” Stockdale said in an interview on http://www.safc.com. “I know their manager, Craig Hignett and [assistant] Curtis Fleming very well and it will be good to see them. “But it will be a very tough game - I watched them last week against Luton, I was impressed by the way they tried to play football, but physically they are strong, they play at that level week-in and week-out. “It’s a challenge for our young players but this is what this tournament is all about.”

So that's four mentions of being physical, one overpower, two strong's. So essentially Sunderland are wanting to toughen up some inexperienced kids against a bunch of League Two thugs. And this is progressing the game in this country and going to make the National team better.

I had a look at the online ticket thing on Sunday and that point hardly any tickets had been sold in the Cyril Knowles. The block I sit in which is normally nearly full with season tickets hold had sold about 12 tickets, with none of the people we sit near having bought them so hopefully very few Pools fans are in attendance.

That's up to you, it's only a game of football at the end of the day you can go if you want. I'm not sure why you'd want to watch or support this competition though. Can you not see the importance of its failure?

There was an article on the BBC football site today from the representative of the checkatrade trophy. To be fair the Q&A the BBC put to them was pretty spot on, addressing the very low attendances (apart from ours tonight, though, WTF?) and the possibility of an all-U23 final, which was acknowledged would be an ultimate failure of the competition as a whole. The biggest thing that was put forward was this wasn't the thinner wedge of introducing Premier B teams to the lower leagues. Instead it was viewed as a way of blooding academy players in proper competitive football and to try and re-invent the JPT which has long been acknowledged as a shit competition.

Now, I don't give a toss for the JPT or any other reincarnation of it, but part of me wishes they'd just left the format alone. You look at Barnsley (who won the competition last season) and they are now making brilliant strides in the Championship. They are arguing that they have introduced bigger prize money because the "big boys" are in play now, (even though the biggest sides have omitted themselves completely!) At the end of the day, this was always a decent-ish chance for Pools to get to Wembley, and now because of this seemingly ulterior agenda most lower league clubs are just f**king it off because of silly rules implemented from up on high. Boils my piss.

It's worrying. The contemp many people feel for the Premier league is in danger of trickling down the divisions. I feel contempt for all who made the decision to involve U23 teams and to an extent all those who attended tonight.

For many people It's another step towards giving up on football altogether.
