I'm ambushing the leavers thread here but the first car bit is far more worthy of being lost in that boring subject.

Mine was a Talbot horizon

I paid £1,200 for it in 1989, did about 10,000 miles in about 6 months before it caught fire when on my way to Donny to watch pools. The insurance paid out £1,800 and I spent the lot on the 1990 World Cup in Sardinia :uhoh:

Any others sctatchinghead

A Red Ford Fiesta (A697 XCN?), 9 years old, less than 10k on the clock. Previous owner a little Old Lady who drove it to the shops and back. Was genuine mileage as A) Her son in law told me, we talked walking our dogs on the park, and B) my mam worked for the car dealership, and my mam knew her stuff about Glass's guide et al, and got it cheap as she worked there.

As much as I loved the car unfortunately it was written off in a 4 car pile up where I was the innocent party.

Already did the my new car bit on the Not Fecking Brexit Again thread -

Just wanted to add that I can vouch for the fact that the Wolseley 16/60 was a solidly built motor - the one that wrote off my Mini was hardly dented.

First car in my own right a 1997 Golf, bought in 2000. Had it for 12 years. Hardly had any chew with it whatsoever. Sold it with 160,000 on it and it was still on the road until a.couple of years ago. Might still be.

Mine was a MK11 Ford Escort, bought it in 1987 for £1100. Had it for about 18 months, lost my job & couldnt afford to run it, so sold it.

Loved my first Dolly, 1850 HL was a wolf in sheeps clothing, cars would pull up alongside and look then the lights would change and they looked bemused as you took off like a bat out of hell, mind I only bought it by default, frank Reid had just bought the Mk 111 cortina 2000E I had gone into Clock Garage to buy and ended up with the Dolly. Had several 1850's and 1500s but never managed to get hold of a sprint.

Austin Princess but the Wolsey luxury version...for £600. It was a belter. Went to London several times and great on motorways, but shit on roads.
A living room on wheels. A car skidded into me near Elwick, came off the worst and the old Princess shrugged it off unmarked.

Mine was a 1998 Nissan Micra bought from Bradleys in Peterlee, I had it about 2 years and must have put 30 odd thousand mile on it. I took it to Hull the day we beat them to get into the playoffs in 2000, I didn't have a clue where I was going I just got in the car and drove in the genral direction.

A very rusty Renault 4, you could see the road through the floor. Bought for £100 in 1980 and sold a year later for £80 before MOT was due, which in those days was for motors 10 year old and over, I think! Great wee car, never let me down. Enjoying this thread, first cars evoke such great memories, cheers.

A Morris 1300 in "bedouin" or, more accurately, hearing aid beige. It used so much oil you didn't really have to change it at services, which I attempted to do myself and usually totally fecked the car up. You needed two hands to change the oil filter but, unfortunately, they needed to be attached to the same wrist. Replaced it with an egg yolk yellow Volkswagen Golf mk1, which could have ruined VW's reputation for quality and reliability singlehandedly. Worst car was a bog standard (and by bog I mean rock festival latrine level) Ford Fiesta, which was crashed into numerous times whilst I wasn't in it. It didn't rattle though, but only because it was so basic there was fuck all on it to rattle.

I bought a Sprint in 1986 Yellow with black vinyl roof, went like stink in a straight line, corners were frightning and as usual the alloy heads cracked and drank water.

Best cars I ever had were two TR6,s a 1969 and 1971, Just sold the last one a few years ago, big mistake!!

Mark 3 Fiesta Bones 1.0L, H427 GBL, bought in 2000 for about £375 .. gearbox shagged in about 6 months so bought a 2nd hand box from the scrappy for £10. Scrap yards full of them so parts where cheap as chips..

lasted 2 years and the floor and sills beyond repair (rust bucket)..

Vauxhall Astra S. The 'S' made all the difference of course. Bought it for about £700 in 1991. The heater stopped working after a while and the mechanic I took it to did the sharp intake of breath through his teeth before stating he'd need to take the whole dash out etc bollocks blah so I decided to drive with the window open most of the time instead.

Did some properly stupid shit in that car.

Amazed I'm still here to be honest.

Fiat Panda with go faster stripes. Destroyed the engine by doing 75 for an hour. Prior to that it impressed the ladies and showed excellent capacity for turning into a small van by taking out the back seat. This could lead to nasty vehicle sliding through red lights incidents when full of records.

Our lass bought one from new in 2004 through to 2011. It did 128,000 miles and only tyres and brake pads were changed. It never broke down once. She put it in part ex for a three year old one and it just passed its test and has a 108,000 on the clock. Again it's never missed a beat.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but in the opinion of a lot of mechanics and other people who know about cars, it doesn't seem like you can go wrong if you buy German or Japanese.

So how come people keep buying Citroëns amd Fiats in vast numbers?

Had a Fiat and an Abarth, not one thing went wrong with them, lovely well built cars. Had 2 fords, one was ok, one the gearbox went within 3 months. Had a nissan, it was easily the worst car I've ever owned. Unreliable and stupidly expensive to run (despite claiming 50+mpg). Got a mate who will never buy German after a bad time with a Golf then an Audi A4 (which expelled its entire gearbox over the A19 in explosive fashion. He drives a Honda S2000 now which hasn't skipped a beat.

To be honest with modern day production values there's not much goes wrong with any particular brand of cars these days, just luck of the draw with the amount of moving parts/sensors etc.

Remember when polo's brought out the middles.
