Decent little piece. Was surprised to see the average L2 wage is £40k.

£750 a week to do something most of us would love to still be doing, not a bad life eh!

Remember as well that 40k is the basic, before appearance money and bonuses.

That includes all the first year and young pro's, some of who won't be getting anywhere near £750 a week.

£40k is Ok until you consider the fact that by your early to mid thirties you are looking at finding a new career.

Interesting that the average salary in League 1 is 75% higher (£70k compared with £40k).

On a squad of 24 that's an extra £720k a year to find! I wonder if Coxall thinks Pools can afford to win promotion?

Before the new TV deal the so-called 'solidarity payments' from the Prem to League 2 clubs were £240k each per season, and £360k each to League 1 clubs.I don't think the exact figures for solidarity payments unfer the new TV deal have been announced yet, although they should be very soon. One estimate is that they will increase by about 70%, or around £400k for League 2 and £600k for League 1. Sounds a lot, but not so great in relation to an 'average' League 1 wage bill of around £1.7 million!

As well as the extra Premier League cash, there's bigger payments for the teams involved in televised League 1 games, the opportunity to put up admission prices and the expectation of increased attendances. And the prayer mat out for a cup run.

Fine if you're Portsmouth, not so lucrative for a club the size of Hartlepool. Still, we've been the poor relations in League 1 before and done alright - for a while at least.
