How does it work these days? Presuming I was to buy a car on Sunday, how do i tax it for the journey home as obviously the V5 or log book wont be in my name?

In the past always bought a car with tax in place so not sure how it works now?

And if you buy it mid month, both you and the previous owner have paid for the tax for the same month

Provided you have sorted out insurance first, the car would need to be mot'd , insured and then you can tax it, option b would be to trailer it home

He is Putting a years MOT on it, my insurance is set up and will be active when I ring them to confirm on the day. Does the online tax bit require proof of insurance?

No the DVLA database will show current status of mot and insurance so shouldn't be a problem
And the new keepers slip off the logbook will give you the reference number you need

Make sure you insure in plenty of time as many insurers systems only update the DVLA computer overnight.
