Just watched this game, how can ANY 'footballer' watch this game and others like it and not feel embarrassed. One of the Aussies reluctantly went off with blood streaming down his face for attention to a cut on his eye or forehead. Throughout the game not one ladyboy squeal, even when it's a bit rough in the scrums, not one disputed decision, or finger wagging at the ref or fake appeal for a throw in etc. I've never played the oval ball game, don't understand all the rules even, but how much I am seeming to enjoy it more.
Does anyone else see it like this?

How can you not know the rules didn't everyone play it at school?

Imagine if any of these 'footballers' we're having a little fun fight with their kids before going to bed, and the bairn say accidentally catches the side of his head, will he scream, roll over several times, busting the telly then touch the side of his face and look for blood on his hand, waving an imaginary card to their lass and she then gives him a good hard kicking and a red card then tells him to go to bed calling him a soft bastard.

Regardless of which sport you think is morally superior (and I'm not going to get into that argument; customs are what they are), you have to admit that that was epic defending. Resilience. Never say die. Whatever.
I can't ever remember seeing England teams in any sport, or at least if I have it's bloody rare, with that kind of determination and grit. The Aussies have previous when it comes to recovering from one down. They pulled out all their stops, came with all guns firing, used every cliché in the book.
And lost by 15 points.
They would have loved to have had replacement second rows and a replacement hooker able to conjure up a try like the one that killed them off.
Fuck that. They would have liked to have friggin' backs do that, never mind forwards. They threw Folau and Foley and two giant Fijian centres and Hooper and everything but the kitchen sink into total attack and couldn't produce a single moment of brillance like little fat Jamie George did when he laid Owen's try on.

Quite simply because England didn't let them.

Bloody fantastic.

Rugby is a completely different game though, it is a pointless comparison. The rules are fairly straightforward and it is pretty simple to say what is a foul and what isn't. It makes the entire thing easier to referee and it stops any attempts of play acting to gain an advantage. When you add in the use of video refs, it generally makes it pointless for rugby players to even try anything like that.

Football on the other hand has a maze of rules as the what constitutes a foul and what doesn't normally based on whether something was an accident or intentional. That is completely open to interpretation which means that players will act up to any contact because they might get a freekick/penalty from it. If they do nothing, they do not get a freekick, a lot of the time this is true when it is a fairly obvious foul.

Plus, the technical and physical differences between the players and the sports mean that football and rugby players are at risk of very different injuries. Footballers are much more likely to get joint injuries like an ACL injury or something like that. Rugby players get impact injuries, and they are normally hefty enough to handle it.

I would never condone diving or play acting, but if you are chasing a ball and you have had a niggly knee injury your entire career, and some clumsy giant centre back like Martin Skrtel dives at you, you would jump out of the way. We all would. In doing so, you lose control of the ball because of a dangerous tackle; that should be a foul. If you want to see play acting out of the game, refs have to be more consistent on how they deal with it, but also on how they protect the players to begin with.
