The police !
I have to be honest when I first saw the news I thought, ahh fook it ! just kick us out and send the idiots home. But after watching a few broadcasts and I do stand to be corrected here, I didn't see any reason for the police to go charging in . What exactly did the lads do wrong ? unless drinking beer and singing are a reason to go in mob handed and start throwing tear gas around? did I miss something ?

It seems thats partly right.

It is also apparant that The police asked the fans to go. To basically go to bed.

Can you blame them?

Why should the police have to spend all of their time standing around whilst the english fans drink all night. Just to protect them from russian mobs.

The england fans were asked to show respect and restraint. They just cant do it can they.

Do they really need to drink themselves stupid in a country where the police must be thoroughly sick of all foreigners just now. Which is quite understandable. Well it is to anyone that can think straight.

Surely anyone can understand why the french police might dislike our fans.

And of course there is always someone else to blame.

Its also been widely reported that the fans were singing offensive songs to local people just passing by.

Very respectful.

And the journos are saying the fans had been drinking and singing for 12 hours.

12 HOURS.

And the chew started when the pubs started to close. When the pubs close you go to bed dont you?

Apparently not. Our fans go wandering round aimlessly searching for more booze.

Lovely.

And there now claims that england and wales fans have been fighting on a train from calais.

I bet this was the fault of the fat controller.

As you say every Saturday Night we have "gangs" of police roaming the streets with CS spray chasing people home because they've been on the piss for 12 hours.. Wonder if they'll try this tactic in Benidorm or Magaluf this year ..

There is no excuse, it's appalling and shameful although do these people have tickets sctatchinghead

Was there any trouble at the last few tournaments in Brazil, Eukraine or South Africa sctatchinghead

It's clear the organisation is a shambles, the police have no idea how to handle crowds and after the disgraceful scenes in Marseille, the police have taken a zero tolerance stance which is just feeding the frenzy of the idiots.

I like a drink when I go to football and I have the odd moan about policing attitudes but have never thrown a bottle, never mind a punch at anyone. These arseholes want locking up or better still deport them to Seria.

If this is true (which i have no idea I haven't read anything other than this thread) it will be interesting if France win the tournament to see if the police have the same stance on all the French fans who will undoubtedly of been drinking and singing on the streets into the early morning.

Saying that I don't understand the need to get to a point of having stand offs or throwing things at Police. No matter what you say about innocent people just having a good time it's people doing things like that which show the country up.

The thing about why should the police stand around all night doesn't wash for me. When France wanted to host the tournament they agreed to the ability to look after all fans.

To be fair when was the last time we had major trouble with our fans at a tournament? Was the last time France in 98?

English fans club or country have done themselves no favours over the years and unfortunately the minority have spoiled it for the majority. The 'Little Englander' has spoiled it for every one.
On the Policing side looking at how the Police break up the the protests going on about the new labour laws, it is no different to dealing with the footy fans, tear gas baton charges etc.

Its not really in French peoples culture to be out drinking beer all night singing anti (insert any country) songs.

I agree they should look after all fans. It would be interesting to know what percentage of the police are out looking after engalnd fans compared to every other country.

It wouldnt surprise me if it was 25% of the total force.

Doesnt that just make you ashamed?

And where do you expect these police to come from to guard our fans all night? Do you expect the police to be on shift for 24 hours straight, without getting at all pissed off?

They are human afterall.

If you cant agree that 12 hours on the lash, in these circumstances isnt enough, then you just have no respect for the country you are in, their citizens, or the fact that France is on high alert and nervousness anyway.

We always need one more bottle of stella dont we?

Two things:

1. Britain is the only the only country I know of where getting completely pissedin a big group, taking over an area and then abusing anyone who isn't part of your group in shouts and songs is seen as being 'boisterous' or having a bit of fun. Everywhere else that sort of thing is seen as aggressive.

To go and do it in Lille straight after the events in Marseille shows that a lot England fans still don't get this basic point. People on this thread are saying they're just singing and having a drink but that's only fair enough if you've grown up with the way British football fans behave. People without that background feel threatened and excluded. I've got French colleagues who just can't square what they see England fans do at football with what they see of English people at work or when they're on holiday.

2. The CRS are a dedicated riot control force and they use the same tactics whoever they are policing. If they think it is time for you to go you get one warning at best and they they fire tear gas and get stuck in with batons. They see that as fairly restrained because what they really like is to get the water cannon tank out and shoot a few people with rubber bullets. I saw them do this to what looked like a completely harmless demo about gay marriage in the middle of Toulouse. One bloke set fire to a bin so they just tear-gassed the whole central square. It was Saturday afternoon and most people were only doing their shopping.

No doubt this is making things worse because people used to British style football policing will feel like they're being picked on and attacked when they're really just getting a taste of what French people expect when they see the CRS arriving.

Oh Mr Toulouse you will open up a right can of worms if you arent careful.

We should be able to drink ourselves sober, stay in the bars and get pissed again. Its what we do, and its perfectly acceptable.

Sleep is for poofs and girls.

And I know for a fact the local French population love listening to our rendition of Ten German bombers.

Afterall it was us what liberated them.

I know for a fact that some of our top boys and top firms got together in 1944 and if wasnt for them Omaha Beach would have failed.

When you say OUR top boys do you mean our American buddies who's job it was to take this beach.

It was led by Bradley Omar of the US 1st army. The US rangers scaled the cliffs to take out the German gun placements. Despite 2400 casualties 34000 troops landed by the end of the day.

Doubt the Americans are coming to save the brits to take out those tear gas guns this time.

I loved listening to my history teacher, the only thing that kept me in school, plus she fancied me. bbolt

anyone see that bit of footage where the police fired tear gas cannisters?

There was an England fan stood dancing in the street, goading them to fire more, with his arms out stretched.

If there was any justice in the world, one of tear gas cannisters would have smacked him right between the eyes.
