One of my all time favourite players when I was a kid.

Terrible. :(

And mine. Met him at Halifax vs Pools 1986, me and me Dad walking up to the Shay as he got out of his Jag. Stopped to chat and was brilliant with us.

My mother is suffering with this appalling illness.

It's so sad.

Barnie Pete, former scourge of the board, used to go to school with Frank Worthington.

Surely one of the worst ways to lose a loved one?

I think an effort is taking place now to link the disease to professional football and more specifically heading the old style balls.

I read the other week that two of the 66 World Cup squad don't even know who they are anymore, one of them being Nobby Styles, really sad.

A great player who played on and off the field for fun and enjoyment. A pleasure to watch, remember seeing in him in his later days, didn't have the legs, but the talent was there still. A pleasure to watch even past his prime and the enjoyment he had playing illuminated the crowd.

As for Alzheimer's,its the worst form of Dementia. Watching a loved one slowly getting worse knowing there is no cure, where as other forms of Dementia can be controlled by tablets, in some cases.

WORTHINGTON DENIES ALZHEIMERS CLAIM; He says he just wants to concentrate preparing for tomorrow's game against former club Bolton Wanderers.

i also had the privilege of seeing FRANK play for SAFC even though he was at the end of his career a great talent on the football pitch.

I think the worst part of is nobody dies of it just with it, which is horrible. Whenever you go and we're going to all you ask for is that your mind is in tact and you can say the things to loved ones that they need to hear and that you want them to. It a disease that takes all that away, the family have all but lost the person who sits and front of them and it must be terrifying and confusing for the sufferrer beyond belief. It's one of many the reasons I don't believe in religious fairy stories because no God would contrive such a cruel affliction.

My mam died with this. She could remember things from her youth but everything else was wiped clean. The heartbreaking thing was she'd get brief moments of lucidity when she came back but it was only seconds. Such a strong person fades out before your eyes and an empty shell is all your left with.

Dosent have a clue who her family members are.
But looks like she will outlive me Dad whos suffering from prostate and bone cancer.
Two tragic deseases that are basically death sentences.

As for Fra k a quality player who i remember watching on Match of the Day in the 70,s.

a typical 70s footballer and character, every club in div 1 in the 70s seemed to have at least a couple like that, skilful but a bit of a maverick, and Worthington was Leicester's

I think the nearest Pools got was Alan Goad!
I also saw Frank playing for Sunderland in the "twilight" of his career. He had the shortest shorts I've ever seen - in fact, as he had his shirt untucked, he might not have had any on!
