Just been reading through this thread on one football forum http://onefootballforum.co.uk/index.php ... eams.9867/ and we don't seem to be too well-liked by other L2 clubs. One calling us the Torquay of north (we're bigger than them surely?) and another saying we're as irrelevant as Morecambe  Others saying how much they'd like us to go down. Well fuck them all I say. Never understood this historical ambivalence towards us, Hartlepool is a decent away day in comparison to many, if anybody actually could be arsed to get here. I don't see why we appear so offensive to other clubs.

I know quite a few people from other parts of the country that over the years have hated coming here. Whether it be the weather, which is freezing for them, the intimidation, which has been there often enough, or just the distance.

If you were a fan from the heart of the country, I would imagine the longest trip away would be one of the ones to miss for many reasons.

Again, I am amazed anyone is surprised.

Oh, and I work now in Cambridgeshire, Essex and Northants, and most people think we are even further North than we actually are.

The only fans that I can remember who really liked us, were the Walsall people. Some of the best Bunker days were in the era of their visits

Apart from that, football fans just dislike each other on principle, usually....even the ones who belong to the same club!

You've been more than a bit selective there Mr AABB. I wasn't too offended by any of these comments:

Hartlepool: Terrific away day and one of the best pubs in the league, 'the Millhouse'. Great away end as well.

Hartlepool: Our Cup Final. They also have the best forward line in the league with BOB - (Big) Billy. Oates. Bingham

Hartlepool United: Great away-day to traditional NE hot bed of football.
Team/Manager - Floundering
Fans - Level-headed
Nourishment - Excellent pie van (and ale) at the Mill House

Don't mind Hartlepool away. I love a northern dirt cheap shithole of a pub! Also like their fancy dress at last game of the season.

Admittedly, we're none too popular with fans from clubs in the deep South, but this Brizzle Rovers fan explains why:

Hartlepool United: Clearing snow if pitch to watch the game only to lose 1-0, horrendous coach journeys, top fans

I wouldn't be surprised at all if they've spent any time talking to you.

Me too. So now The Colonel has at least 26 different identities, works in three different counties at once and comes from a place much further North than it is. That man could single-handedly provide the cast and settings for a film noir.

I think we are well liked, mainly because of Jeff Stelling. Everyone I know who has come to watch their team play us at the Vic said it was a good day out. Some people in the south have the perception that we are a couple of miles from the Scottish border and that we play on permafrost, but proper footy fans ie ones who make the effort to come to places like the Vic appreciate us.

Some right arseholes on that forum but I wouldn't read much into it. I am clearly blinkered but if I wasn't a pools fan I would say that it would be one of the best days out.

Barnet is going to be interesting this weekend, a new ground so looking forward to it but I fully expect it to be a non event in terms of atmosphere and local drinking dens confised

Morecambe is probably the best trips I've had in years in terms of overall match experience and days out.

The 2 Exeter fans were disappointing, I always enjoy going down there as its a fabulous place to visit but the away end is an absolute disgrace.

Some of my favourite away days over the years have been:

York
Brentford
Lincoln
Orient
Notts County
Forest
Barnet
Norwich
Shrewsbury (old ground)
Exeter

Basically somewhere that is easy to get to on the
train/tube, has a proper ground and plenty of friendly pubs. Exactly like the Vic.

There's nowt worse than a purpose-built, soulless shed in the middle of nowhere which you can only get to by car and has no pubs anywhere near it. See:

Scunny
Oxford
Coventry
Walsall
Northampton
Stevenage
Swansea
Plus loads more I can't bear to bring to mind.

Burton is ellish for a day on the piss, but you have to get a bus out to the ground which is a prefab nowt. The away end is terraced mind, so it's not all bad.

We can hardly be held responsible for the obviously poor standard of geography teaching in those counties or the general ignorance of the their population. We've always been here, always wil be, the trouble is anywhere 'up north' gives them the vapours, it's their problem not ours.
