In shock here, have many vivid memories of listening to his commentaries when I was a teen in the 80s whilst waiting for the pools snippets.

RIP sadx

He was the figurehead of BBC Tees' football coverage and I suppose lots of us ended up giving him stick for how little attention they gave/give to Pools. I think a passionate broadcaster like him who clearly loved his club is just what you need in local radio though. Shame there isn't anybody pushing Pools forward in the same manner.

Condolences to his family, friends and listeners.

Met him a couple of times when he worked for Barclays in Redcar - he lived and breathed the Boro - a true football fan - and a decent bloke.

RESPECT

RIP

I don't think anyone would have a genuine issue with him, just daft football rivalry when people say things thing don't mean often in
jest. It went back to Radio Cleveland days when they'd rather talk about grass growing at Ayresome Park than talk Pools or Darlo.

I don't will and never like the Boro but I think most sane people wouldn't actually dislike a human being because of his passion for a football team. Especially someone who it seemed was a really nice bloke who nobody had a bad word to say about. I was gutted when I heard the news even though he annoyed me loads back in the day not hearing his voice on the radio again will be very strange.

I could never understand how the BBC let him get away with such biased reporting, but you couldn't deny his passion for 'Boro. Just wish "our man" Ivan Ash showed a fraction of Ali's commitment instead of taking every opportunity to make a cheap crack at Pools players expense.
