I'm posting this just in case the old bloke [or his friends or relatives or lawyer] who got hammered by the Police after the game needs a witness. I was leaving the stadium with my son at 5pm. We were walking down past the last of the Derby supporter buses and just in front there was a group of Police stood next to a decently dressed old grey-haired guy of about 60. I'm not aware of what had happened but there was some altercation particularly between the old bloke and a young animated copper. A small crowd had gathered ,including us. As the small crowd began to disperse the young copper grabbed the man in a headlock and flattened him head first in to the pavement. At no point did the man make or attempt to make any physical provocation. He was dragged to his feet, handcuffed and put in the back of a Police Van.
Other people who had witnessed the incident were shocked ,as I was. I though this sort of stuff [and I mean random violence by the police at football games] had disappeared 20 years ago] Did anyone else see this ?

I was leaving the ground just after this happened, there was a few recording though. I heard someone say the copper kneed him in the face, you say different but plenty of people were shocked. I expected to see a young chav when they got him up but no it was an old man with a couple older ladies.

I once saw a bloke steal a mans wallet.

When I gave evidence in court the judge asked what had happened 1 hour earlier but I didn't know so the judge let him off.

s177 of PACE. The police can use reasonable force in the exercise of their duties. The case law on reasonableness makes it clear that what's reasonable depends on the context including the physicality of the participants. From what the OP says, Bresslaw, what happened previously is highly unlikely to suggest the police's reaction was reasonable, unless the old bloke posed a threat beyond his advanced years. He may have been wearing a suicide vest, but I doubt it.

No, I'm simply pointing out the relevant law. Usually, it's not controversial to note that the threat from someone older is usually lower than someone younger, so the response should be appropriate to the context. As the court of appeal made clear in the Tony Martin case, the physical condition of the participants is relevant to the question of what is reasonable.

And the OP saw enough to be able to make a judgment on what is reasonable. It is, after all, a jury question, so I'm happy to accept his call.

I can't believe a police officer would do such a thing, I mean it's not their way to abuse their power, to lie for each other, to not share facts with the cps if the facts don't back up their case.

No none of that sort of thing happens in fair society of ours.

Who's said that? Are you really saying that a young copper will, more times than not, be justified in using that level of force on a 60 year old bloke? I agree that it's difficult to be certain, but it won't be the first time this may have happened. Part of my job involves looking at complaints against the police. They're not perfect. I'm really struggling to see where you're coming from here. Are you being contrary for the sake of it? Or are you a copper?

Nothing to do with incident but I thought the Police presence outside of the ground today was totally ridiculous, Cleveland Police must have thought it was still 1984. Or maybe just some welcome overtime everyone's a bit skint in January.

I am over 60 and have been in some altercations with the boys in blue over the years, but what is the alternative? Raqqa, Mosul, etc? Boy shooting his mother dead because she doesn't agree with with his chosen path in life? Not quite the same as a bit of a do is it?

In every walk of life you have tinpot Hitlers abusing their power, however police are more seen and should know better but they don't. I know a few Coppers and some prison staff majority are great but some you hear comments and stories about what they done to arrest or restrain a person and they think it's funny, all of these are past military whether that's a connection I don't know but just giving my experiences.

Also struggling to understand why anyone would want to be in the Freemasons?

Are prison officers just the ones that weren't good enough for the police? Or the ones that wanted to dish out the beatings behind closed doors?

If you share no common area's with them I'm not sure why this is a positive; I'm sure your conversations must be scintillating!

But that's fine if you want to limit your interests and pastimes to defending your 'friends' who abuse power using excessive force of elderly gentlemen!
