Train from Thornaby to Manchester Airport. 19 quid. I get it all of the time, it's always on time, always clean and is pretty fast.

Check the weather first.

That's the first time I've heard the Trans-Pennine 'Express' described as pretty fast. It's like catching a local bus, especially the stretch between Leeds and Manchester when it stops every couple of miles and is permanently rammed.

Can't beat if for price or convenience though.

It once cost me £1.50 to get from Manchester Airport to Hartlepool.

Train from Airport - Manc City Centre (Free - no conductor)
Megabus from Manc City Centre - Middlesbrough - (£1.50)
Train from Boro - Hartlepool (Free - no conductor)

Took about 3 weeks like but worth it.

If you catch it at the right time you can save a bit of money buying the tickets to York and then to Manchester; I've never managed to get it at the right time saving more than a few quid but its something. Last time I did it the woman next to me went to the toilet 5 times from York to Manchester, I thought I'd better go check to see what the attraction was.
