Good list....missed The Jayhawks, Cracker, 10,000 Maniacs, Ash, Supergrass, Gin Blossoms, Auteurs, Counting Crows these are just from albums I can actually see from where I'm sat. The 90s were fucking great..they also spawned possibly the best albums from XTC, The Fall, Julian Cope (Peggy Suicide), Elvis Costello (Brutal Youth)...not to mention Squeeze (Play) The Pretenders (Viva El Amor).

The Jayhawks' Hollywood Town Hall is a belter.

I didn't even mention Shellac, The Breeders, Codeine, And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead, Autechre, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, The Grifters, Sugar, Soul Junk, Buffalo Tom and on and on and on

To suggest music is crap in any given week is insane never mind a full decade!

Would struggle to agree The Fall made their best album in the 90s like, as good as Extricate is...

90's METAL was fine, but how do you define the 90's, you mention some bands that were making music before then....can't believe you included Cornershop....ha ha ( 1 hit wonders)
Machine Head, Fear Factory, Bullet For My Valentine, Stabbing Westward, Mindset, Rammstein, Disturbed, Soulfly, Pantera, Lamb Of God, Die Krupps, Testament, Slayer, Anthrax, Megadeth, Ozzy, Sepultura, Dub War, Pretty Maids, Saxon, Nuclear Assault, Mad Max, Bonfire, Gotthard....etc

I define the 90s as being between 1990 and 1999 and everyone on that list made brilliant music between those years

Cornershop were and still are great but yes agreed they made their best music in the 00s...

Metal not really my bag to be honest although I am partial to a snifter of Napalm Death when I've got a particularly large pile of ironing to get through

The indie kid in me would also put forward " Songs by Northern Britain " by Teenage Fanclub, and " If You're Feeling Sinister " by Belle and Sebastian.

Yeah Loveless and Endtroducing both stunning, along with Odelay which I also missed

I like The Manics until I actually have to start listening to their lumpen pub rock...

Suede were great early on but diminishing returns after their first few singles

Primal Scream did release probably the most overrated album of the decade in Screamadelica but to be fair they did come back with the superb XLR8R in 2000

All imho obviously....

Absolutely tons of great music around in the 90s. I'm biased like because it was my era due to when I was born, but when you look back there was definitely an explosion in the variety of genres and crossover between them. Maybe because of technology being cheaper, or because distribution got easier?

Whilst I've always loved indie, I have a weakness for electronica too, and the 90s was a golden age for it. Orbital, Future Sound of London, The Orb, Underworld, Slam, Chemical Brothers etc, loads of it stands up really well today. Particularly the 'Accelerator' album by Future Sound of London which still sounds fresh as a daisy 25years on.

Time has not diminished by love of Loveless, listened to it today while tip tapping away at work, and it still sounds magnificent.

I wouldn't mind being a few quid behind B and S on the royalties front, they seem to have stretched a moderate amount of talent one hell of a long way.

It's just one of those records that will never date with the exception of Soon, sadly, that indie-dance Classic with the baggy beat

Totally agree, I can't imagine a time when Orbital 2, Aphex Twin's Selected Ambient Works Vol 1 or The Black Dog's Temple Of Transparent Balls don't sound anything other than class

Funny enough I saw them at the Redcar Bowl and they were supported by an Irish band called "A House", they were pretty good as well.

How about The Prodigy's 'Music for the Jilted Generation'? Far better than 'The Fat of the Land'.

Dinosaur Jr were still knocking out good records, Royal Trux' Accelerator is superb and the 12" of Jesus Built My Hotrod is one of the greatest records ever made. Lot of good On U Sound releases from the likes of Dub Syndicate as well.

A very decent but chilly gig in 1991 was the Rollercoaster Tour at Whitley Bay ice rink. Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine, Dinosaur Jr and Blur. My Bloody Valentine were more like an awe inspiring sonic experience than seeing a band.

Endless Art seems to show up on most "indie" compilation CDs of a certain age.

Yeah A-House were a good band, got their album after that gig!

The 90's were good for female-fronted poppy bands too. The Katydids, DiVinyls, VOTB, Shakespeares Sister, Sleeper, Elastica etc...as well as the more hip Pixies and co.

'Moderate amount of talent' Mark? Never! I'd agree that their later stuff is pretty banal, but their three 90s albums and the Lazy Line Painter Jane EP are all great. Stuart Murdoch has to be one of my favourite lyricists of all time...

Dont like music really but heard a song the other day called "She said" by the LongPig or someone. No idea if it was 90s or not but quite enjoyed it.

Not particularly familiar with them apart from that song, but Richard Hawley was a member of the group and I'd say 'Baby, You're My Light' was the song that made a 15 year old Kolley Kibber realise there was good music underneath the layer of chart/indie filler music I was used to listening to.

Some great choices from Doris Tissot and others. That looks like a decent chunk of my music collection! A simply fabulous decade for music, though as DT rightly says it's a bit daft to talk about decades as if they are somehow separate entities, as if music changed dramatically in 1990 and then again in 2000. There is wonderful music being released all the time, and there always will be. To say any year or era is "crap" is just bizarre.

Looking at the above list it's difficult not to get just a little nostalgic as a lot of those names will always be associated with gigs that were either memorable in some way for me, or just fecking brilliant. Just picking on one... Shellac at the Leadmill was the first of 100s of gigs that I've been to with a great friend of mine. A special night.

I'd have to put Godspeed You! Black Emperor in there too. The proper debut album and EP were just a joy, and their Bristol gig supported by Fly Pan Am and Sigur Ros is one of my highlights.

The Fall in the 90s? I wouldn't say it's their very best material, not when you consider they ended the 80s with Kurious Oranj and started the 00s with The Unutterable, both better than anything in between to these ears, but the 90s was a very prolific and consistent body of work, with very little to dislike (I don't listen to Levitate much). Cave was on stellar form in the decade. To release Let Love In, Murder Ballads and The Boatman's Call as consecutive albums is just showing off.

I saw GY!BE at the Sage a few weeks back, absolutely stunning although the full evacuation for a false fire alarm spoiled the ambience somewhat. Was also lucky enough to see Cave there earlier this year, one of the highlights of my gig-going life...

Levitate is one of my favourite 90s Fall records, probably cos it's all over the place and contains the mighty 4 1/2 Inch. Steve Hanley's fantastic book The Big Midweek gives a good insight into the lunatic/genius that is MES...

With mention of some of thes bands that came out of Scotland at the time (B&S, Arab Strap, Ballboy, The Delgados...) the one I really regret not seeing was Prolapse. Four excellent albums (two in particular) over 5-6 years but I managed to miss them performing. I loved the contrasting vocals: sweet, tuneful, female, English vs unhinged, incomprehensible, male, Scottish. It was like a listening to a couple having a violent domestic during a Fall soundcheck. With Mogwai having picked them out of retirement to support them this summer (missed that too!) maybe it's not too late. Open the set with Flex, play Deanshangar and finish with Tina This Is Matthew Stone. I'd be a happy bunny!

I always thought Dawn Of The Replicants were a great Scottish band as well. Had tons of major label money chucked at them but we're just too different for the mainstream despite classics like Candlefire and Mary Louise.

My doctor has recommended I only talk about 90s music so I don't have to think about Mikael Mandron and Jake Carroll....

I can't believe no one has mentioned Right Said Fred yet.

It wasn't a patch on Hole in the Ground. Shame there isn't a feller in a bowler hat to call time on this thread.

Although it's obvious music isn't conditioned by the last two figures in the date, Mr I did kind of put forward the idea that the 90's was a shining example of great music. (It's pretty clear you all noticed it was mainstream music he was talking about, right?)

Allow me to express the alternative view that 90s music was no less bollocks than other decades.

I was hedging my bets in case everyone knew about the O'Connnels but me!

I've been watching from a distance but I don't particularly feel like posting when I have the impression we're re-living 2014-15.
It's not a sign that I've given up on Pools; just that I don't feel much like talking about them right now.

Some very worthy examples of '90's music in this thread no doubt but all a bit British, dreary and shoe-gazerie for me. For a bit more colour how about Japan's fabulous Pizzicato 5

Pure Pop heaven!

Great band, although I'm not sure anyone mentioned a single British shoegaze band!

In fact especially noticeable by their absence so far have been Pale Saints

For even more colour try Melt Banana off the first list...last year's gig at The Cluny has given me chronic tinnitus

Loud? You've never lived! Motorhead supported by Tank, Newcastle City Hall June 81. I've been to hundreds of gigs, in dozens of venues, but never experienced anything like the volume levels of that night. it actually hurt your brain!

Pretty much the most consistently funny thing on the internet. Amazing that he can be arsed to put in the care and detail into everything.
