Last time ELO were mentioned on here it seemed to create quite a bit of interest, just to let everybody know if you dont already that Jeff Lynne is playing the Newcastle Arena on the 14th of April next year. Cheapest tickets are 50 bar mind.

The price of tickets are extortionate / got out of hand but then whilst people pay, rises will continue confised

My youngest daughter (13 yr old) follows a boy band and they have just released tickets for The O2 in April where the cost is also £47 banghead to make matters worse, the booking fee / service charge is another £9 fooking quid banghead

Now my youngest is doing really well at school and so whilst that continues I don't mind the odd bribe to keep her interested but it really is shocking. I thought something was supposed to be done about the service charge / booking fees banghead

Tickets for music gigs by well known acts are stupidly expensive, but bear in mind that musicians' income from sales of recorded product have plummeted as it's all available digitally for nowt or next to nowt.

The only relevant question is are you going to pay the asking price to see them live? Personally you'd have to pay me to go and see most so-called 'heritage' acts living on past glories, unless they still have a reputation as a great live band.

I'd pay £57 pound for a ticket to see the classic ELO line up performing (obviously minus Kelly Groucutt) rather than see Jeff with with the Take That 'live backing band'. Despite the ridiculous ticket prices, I imagine the tour will sell out within minutes....I'm tempted to try and go, BUT doubt it will happen.

Nostalgia and playing live is where the money is.

I was in a not very successful indie band in my youth, and we got offered 6 grand to play one gig in London a couple of year back. People will seemingly pay stupid money to listen to songs that remind them of when they were young.

Cant see the point myself. Makes more sense going to see new bands IMHO.

Chip.....you said NO ?!

Chip I reckon you're doing yersel down there, but I agree with you about watching music from the past.

I was tempted to go to the Jesus and Mary Chain 'Psychocandy' tour earlier this year, but I listened to the album for the first time in a couple of years, and I just couldn't imagine comfortably off blokes pushing 50 making that sort of noise with any energy. The 30 bar ticket price put me off too.

The only exception I can think of was watching St Etienne performing 'Foxbase Alpha' at the End of The Road this year, firstly cos they are still making good new music, secondly cos it still stands up as a very good album, and lastly because I would quite happily go and watch Sarah Cracknell hang washing up for an hour.

Credit where it's due Chip....guess you did stuff that the late/great John Peel might have played on his Radio 1 show. Back on the subject of ELO, few months ago I went watching a Punk band called 'The Electric Shite Orchestra' I just had to....like POP/punk as well as ELO !

That "Rent A Band" that Take That, McCartney et al use get right on my pip.

Saw "The Orchestra" a few times, fronted by Kelly Grocutt, pretty much ELO minus Jeff Lynne and Bev Bevan. They were superb.

I like nostalgia, like!

I reckon the whole nostalgia thing depends on how much bands emphasised youth when they were first at it. You get old reggae, blues, folk and jazz players who just saw themselves as musicians and still do. They'll play til they drop without looking daft and I'll happily go to watch them. When it comes to punk and indie of the JAMC sort it was so focused on youth and youthful attitude that people in their 50s, 60s and up playing it doesn't appeal at all.

Not sure where ELO fit into that but I've never liked them much so I wouldn't be interested unless it was less than a tenner. Plastic Bertrand played round here a while back but I missed it.

Totally agree with the above. Some music dates rapidly, especially music that was more concerned with image rather than content. I saw Hammond B3 master Brian Auger at Gateshead Town Hall on Friday - he must be over 70 but music pours from every pore - best £16 I've spent in a long time.

Nostalgia ain't what it used to be.

Wen't to see Debbie Harry at Woolaton Park a few years ago. Apart from the wheelbarrow full of botox she was excellent. Not sure whats hard about putting records in the charts. I did it twice and I can't sing!

I know what you mean about music aging though. I was knocking about with a girl years ago who was involved in a god awful band called Blue Mercedes. They were a one hit wonder with a song called 'I want to be your property' which sounded ok in the studio but truly awful in retrospect.

Only worth it if Rod died on stage right in front of you. I reckon the odd kick about and endlessly having to shag much younger women has kept him reasonably fit so its a very expensive longshot.

Dont get me wrong, theres a time and a place for all that stuff, and many venues now rely on those sort of gigs to keep going. I just find it a bit depressing when I read stuff where medium sized festival promoters are complaining about the lack of good new bands coming through, and how they are increasingly reliant on bands reforming.

Was talking online to a young lad from Leeds whose band I liked about a month ago, and he was telling me how they had split up after one album and a couple of singles on small independent labels. Sounded like there was nowhere for them to play and they just felt they were never going to get anywhere.

Even London theres a massively reduced number of venues to play compared to say 20 or 30 year ago.

Unfortunately this is not new.
About 4 - 5. Years ago went to see a band called Detroit Social Club who had a couple of cracking singles. Got talking to them after the gig and they said they were splitting up because they just couldn't be arsed with the scene. The labels and social media aspect rubbish they were expected to do. The lack of places to play for money that would keep them going. Couple of months later they split up and I think the last gig they did was Stockton Riverside. Got some great photos with them from that night though.

Now it seems going to gigs is the new going out. People will pay to go to a gig rather than a nightclub. So you get plenty of wasted idiots that only know one song and end up being a nuisance.

Sorry, I get a bit ranty about this as it's a particular bugbear of mine.
A decent band can get two dozen people at a venue then an average one will fill it because they have one single played on radio 1, then half the crowd will talk and drink through the entire set until they hear that one track banghead

The nostalgia gigs get too many people there for the sole reason of getting together with friends and having a drink. Very little to do with the music. They just don't 'go out' like they used to so it's the social aspect. At least respect the musicians!

Now there are plenty of older bands that are sick of this culture. That refuse to play some of the 'hits'. Fair play to them. It's a hard balance to mesh the big songs with those they want to play.

James don't play sit down.
Radiohead don't want to play creep.
At a primal scream gig Bobby Gillespie actually had a go at the crowd because they kept shouting for one song (can't remember if it was rocks or loaded), shouting I bet you haven't heard this because it was from their current (at the time) album, during the encore. The whole vibe felt wrong for that gig, which is partly the bands fault but I can understand the frustration.

It goes on and it's saddening.

If James don't play "Sit Down", Radiohead don't play "Creep" and Primal Scream don't play "Rocks", "Loaded " and "Jailbird" then I'm sorry, but they are being cvnts.

I went to go see The View a few year back at Jax, was a fan of The View back in the day. Place was rammed and they never played "Same Jeans", people started kicking up a bit of a fuss at the end over it. I still see the likes of James headlining festivals, realistically they should pop on stage play "Laid" and "Sit Down" then bugger off. Might just be me but I'm not much of a James fan.

I think that's more down to the fact their music has changed considerably since the "creep" days. Now more electronica than rock. They haven't released a proper rock album since OK Computer.

I went to Leeds Festival this year..the most entertaining band I saw were Ash..they just wandered on, played 15 hit singles and fucked off. Went down a storm.

By god there was some right shite masquerading as the "Next Big Things".
