My mate who is a Notts County fan is stopping in the town on Boxing Day night after the match as he is heading up to Scotland the next day. He has asked which the best ale pubs are now. I've told him:

Rat Race
Causeway
Jacksons

Any more?

The Globe, The Cosmopolitan and The Fisherman down the Headland are decent too

The Rat Race is a brilliant pub although it will probably be closed as it doesnt open sundays and mondays

I have a question. You do want him to enjoy coming here don't you? Like have a nice time and that? So you're sending him to the Rat Race? Being in the presence of the bloke behind 'the bar' for more than 10 minutes can send a man into a spiral of manic depression.

I bought a pint in there once. I would've jumped in front of the 12:15 to Nunthorpe if it wasn't cancelled.

I went in there with me three year old son and ordered a pint of lager and a packet of crisps ... he was none too chuffed. Then when I asked him to put some music on he turned blue in the face ...

... mighty goodly fun

Cant believe Horden hasn't suggested a few

I was at Fulham / Birmingham on Saturday and a pie and a pint was £8 confised needless to say, I didn't bother. You could even get a steak and Philly sandwich for £6.50

I saw joe Jordan at the game so any gamblers out there may fancy a flutter on 'Harry' as next manager bbolt

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. He went in a few of them before the cup game a couple of years back and said they were all canny.

He mentioned about fish and chips as well, as he was dead impressed with what he got down Seaton, but I doubt any will be open on Boxing Day. Verrills obviously won't be, but if anyone knows of any others please let me know.

I have always found the King John to be decent but the worst is the Tall Ships, they don't know how to look after beer. Last time I was in I sent 2 pints of Guinness back, crap at around £3.40 a pint, switched to the Real Ale and that wasn't much better.

He hasn't been on since him and PJ agreed to go out for a date.

Was in the Ward Jackson last Friday night, nice pint of Strongarm and only £1.65 a pint. Also visited the Causeway, the Blackies, the Jacksons and the Royal. Decent pint in all of them except the Royal cos by then we were on the spirits, shots and jugs of some green stuff that I have absolutely no idea what it was.

To be fair, I reckon top shelfers in the Royal is the way to go.

I reckon that would have been a jug of 'Skittles' a Royal specialty!

My mate has just texted to say he's had some good craic with people in the Causeway, and was advised to take his Notts dut off by the landlord in the Odd Bar. It's ages since I've had a session in town - he's not likely to get started on anywhere these days is he?
