Facebook has just suggested I send a friend request to someone who I have no mutual friends with, and only ever had dealings with in a job nearly two years ago.

Definitely something sinister going on with them, I can't work out how it knows the connection other than them reading emails or something.

Chip is correct, Facebook checks your phone, which sounds scary, it'll match up the fact you've had dealings with this person before.

I checked this birds photos out who I seen at the gym the other day, looked at about 6 of her pictures, Facebook the next day suggested I befriend her, clearly telling me to stop stalking her n befriend her.

Facebook is ok, helps me keep in touch with family, but it's a sneaky fucker.

I only ever emailed her from my work computer, but her name (a very unusual one) is in my phone contacts list and that's the only way they can know I had dealings with her.

Privacy as we know it is well and truly dead, and we've all consented to it.

It started sending me friend suggestions a couple of years back for a bloke based in La Reunion (remote French colony) who I did a translation for prolly 13-14 years ago and haven't been back in touch with since.
None of the e-mail addresses or phone numbers I had back then were still active when I joined Facebook, and he isn't on any of my own contact lists. Any friends of a friend I might have had (which AFAIK I haven't) will also have my old contact data.

FB is like malaria: once you've had it you can never get rid. You can't untag yourself in photos. You can't delete your account permanently. I'm surprised there hasn't been a European directive to the contrary so I'm guessing they found the right amount to offer as a bribe.

I am glad somebody else has mentioned this.

Facebook started sending me friend suggestions. About half I didn't know but about half I did, including?

1. One was an old friend I am no longer in touch with who lives in Australia.
2. About three were solicitors I frequently come into contact with at my place of work but I do not have their numbers and I didn't even know their full names. One of those solicitors I hadn't seen for three years and was according to her facebook page was now living in Hull.
3. One was a barrister I occasionally come into contact with, again I do not have their phone numbers or socialise with them. I have once e-mailed that person on my work e-mail account about work related matters.
4. Two were checkout girls at the local Sainsbury's I go to. Again I did not know their names.
5. I think one was an old friend's ex-girlfriend.
6. A relatives boss.

I live in a city, which contains 750,000+ people. I have absolutely no idea how facebook did this. I have no links to any of the above people other than the first one whose names is still in my phone but he's changed numbers. Most of the others I didn't even know their names.

It unnerved me and the only thing I can think of is maybe facebook is tracking my GPS? I was also concerned it was suggesting to them that they add me as a friend.

I don't own an I phone and frankly have no intention of, though I well believe what previous posters are saying about it in relation to tracking etc. As for Facebook I always thought it had sinister implications. I had a good clear out a few months ago of friends ( well acquaintances really ) and now I just have a tight knit group of left wing political contacts. I am not naive enough to post something on there though that MI5 or the CIA would be interested in, make no mistake those bounders are monitoring everybody with left wing leanings as Chip would put it.

What spooks me about Facebook is your friend may be friends with someone who certainly isn't your friend, yet they get to see some of the things you may post. They could be controversial and then the bush telegraph swings into action and trouble looms. To be honest, the whole internet thing is a disaster waiting to happen, its fooking the world up IMHO.

Anyway got to dash, some married woman from Peterlee on tinder wants shagging this afternoon. LOL!

Funny thing is, a post I made 2-3 years back echoing the exact same sentiments as PIN does here was met with derision or else people teaching their granny to suck eggs. I'm glad people are now stopping being sheep and questioning the corpocracy we live in. Glad for them that is.

I know you can only know the world you are born into, and it's easy to scoff the people who were there before you and didn't have today's ultimate gadget; but if there's one thing I'm pleased to have experienced, it's a world in which you could pretty much do what the fuck you liked, discreetly or not according to your character, and the radius of knowledge was like 400 yards absolute max. You had to go to the ends of the fucking earth to get heard of beyond that.

At the end of the day if you have nothing to hide there's not a problem.

Good grief, Mr Teeth. Do you really not see the difference between having nothing to hide and wanting your private life to stay private?

If u want privacy don't have Facebook.

It's that simple.

That's not the point, though, is it?

People signed up for facebook before the privacy thing became obvious.

The upshot is that they've now convinced a whole generation, or much of it, that it's normal to be stalked.

I'm sure plenty of good comes from the lack of privacy of Facebook to be honest.

I reckon it will be location thing, I was at a trade show last week she'll have been at too.

On balance, I think Facebook has more positives than negatives, but I'm looking forward to whatever supersedes it.

Dead right. I'm totally pissed off that the cameras I installed all around your property have so far revealed nothing.

Not a problem my arse.

All I can say is thank fuck there weren't any cameras around in my youth. Normal silly stuff kids do nowadays is going to be captured and haunt them forever, even if they don't have a Facebook account.
