For me, to play 4-4-2 you need a widdrington/Tinkler/tishibola in centre mid for it to work. We simply don't have one.

Friendlies are only unimportant when you lose them it seems. I seem to recall when we have had a really good season, it followed on from good pre - seasons. Ideally you build up confidence by whopping the likes of Billingham Town, then you play better sides like Whitby and Spennymoor, still winning but by a lesser margin. To concede in these games is not good. Then you crank things up a bit by playing a team from a league above like Scunthorpe or Chesterefield, to win these games suggests you are going to have a good season and possibly you already have a team of Lg 1 standard playing in Lg 2. A draw in these games would be more than acceptable, suggesting steady progress, a loss is excusable as long as its not a heavy one, 0-1 or 1-2 would be okay as it can bring players/team who previously thought they were invincible thanks to whopping non league teams, down to earth. Then you finish pre season off with a stiff physical encounter away to a conference side such as Gateshead, you should win this game as the opposition are from a division below. Your superior fitness should tell, just as the superior fitness of Scunthorpe or Chesterefield told when they maybe beat you earlier.

Thats how I see pre - season, and so far it is not going to plan. We havent a midfield or a forward line who can score more than 1 goal against opposition at our own lg2 level. Paynter so far looks like joining the ranks of Nish, Howard, Harewood. I would imagine Scunthorpe and Gateshead fans are much more confident going into the new season. Maybe they have better players or are fitter or both. As much as we all rate Moor remember Pools are still shopping in Poundland.

Cant see Ronnie reverting to 442 until the loan market opens in september.
When a good winger(s) is required and as HAMSTER says a tishibola type player in midfield also needed.

I just watched the highlights and Paynter is now dead to me. Luckily Bingham is utterly brilliant and could easily get 40 goals this season. We"ll still be in the shit though because in that formation the defence will ship at least four every match. If Moore can't see this he must have pickled eggs for testicles.
