I know we have a scouting system but, would holding open trial sessions once or twice a year be beneficial?

At that sort of level it probably makes more sense but I doubt you are going to unearth many football league standard players at an open trial day.

a bit of a waste of time if you ask me.

Send one of our scouts along to Darlos open day trials and if theres any decent talent offer them a trial at Pools.

Might piss off Loan Star Sussex and Quaker Pete like!

I think it'd be worth a shot, there are other teams who do it at this level and above in fact. Sheffield United have been very successful doing this over the years by spotting the likes of Phil Jagielka and Michael Tonge. They do tend to have an age limit but with the level of the Northern League I'd give it ago, even if you specifically invited players as well.

Yeovil did a couple of trialist matches this year because of the low number of players they have but they allowed the supporters to come watch and rate players or say which they liked the look of on feedback sheets.

Im sure regarding northern leagues trials etc, our current crop of ex non league players should be able to recommend a fair few who could be worthy of a trial. Was talking to a colleague who played with both Fenwick and Hugill and he isnt surprised at all at how they are doing at this level but is more surprised at how few get their chance as there are lots he rates at the same level or higher.

It says people have to apply by CV first. So they are making selections based on paper first. That's hardly fair to those that can't put a CV together (ie most of Darlo) and is hardly in the spirit of finding the diamond among the rough.

Oh and no I don't think Pools should do it. Ronnie's not that desperate.

Can't see the harm in having open trial sessions, could get a few decent non league players turning up.

Scott Fenwick touting himself back in 2013, I rumbled him. So technically I'm responsible for Scott Fenwick.

Everton run open trials every year for kids aged around 12/ 13

Liverpool run a 5 a side tournament every year aimed at the same year group and they invite all schools in the area - the idea being, they will see every kid that has potential in the local area.

Surely Pools could offer something similar, aimed at the older age group for late bloomers. A lot of kids touted to be good at aged 12/13 fizzle out as they hit 18/19, surely the reverse is true too.

Would of been useful under Cooper due to his lack of contacts/knowledge of players he'd not worked with previously.

Ronnie knows this level like the end of his nose, the only thing that would stop him bringing in players is the budget and that appears to be far more relaxed than in recent history.

If it's for kids then fair enough but don't expect dibble to approve.

Before we played Bury away I bumped into Humphreys waiting to get picked up going to Rochdale and he was telling us that the person responsible for him getting the trial there first and subsequently us after was Nathan Luscombe

Nathan Luscombe is always the man in the know regarding rumours and signings.

Every time he unearths a talent he gets kebab and chips with a can of lager. You can't argue with the results.

The results of the kebab, chips and lager? Yeah they're doing wonders for him!
