I'm going to move with the times and get a tablet. Any recommendations?
Would prefer an Android operating system, with a big screen. They had one in Tesco that was something like 'anus' - Asus? that was fairly cheap. Anyone inow if they're any good.

I know little about this kind of stuff so I bought a Blackberry tablet a few years ago as it was cheap and I thought it was ok. Then I bought an iPad a couple of years later and realised how crap the Blackberry one was in comparison.

Tesco has its own line of tablets, personally i would never pay too much for a tablet. for a 100 you'll get a tablet that will do pretty much anything you need too. Or you can pay more than double for an ipad mini and it wont do anything more. Just remember if you buy an apple your stuck with loading whatever is on itunes unless you want to jailbreak it.

Apple can go and shite as far as I'm concerned. I think I'll just get a Tesco own brand one if there's not much difference. It's mainly for use by our lass which will be mainly going on t'internet.

The hudl 2 is under a £100 now..seems the screen is a bit fragile though..m'lady wants one, haven't a clue about them..and a ton seems reasonable seeing i know she'll break it.

I have an iPad with work and initially hated it but now love it but I only use it for the notability app and PDF for work

If a grown up is going to use it I'd avoid an ipad.
As mentioned already, most £100 tablets will meet most peoples needs in all respects. Only limitation for some is being unable to add extra storage space if you want to fill it full of videos for kids to watch on the move and the like.
Tesco might be your best bet as you can get £20 off £100 on stuff like tablets online. If you want a hudl you can double any clubcard points too.

I bought a hudl2 at Christmas and it seems to run fine. I have had iPads in the past and they are definately the best for me. I have a dell tablet for work and that is really good. Just like a laptop

If you must have Apple then go with an ipad and take the hit on price, otherwise the Hudl2 @ £99 is a really good bit of kit.

You can feel a lot more superior (a la Jizz) surfing on the iPad knowing you spent £200 bar for something that's not much better but has an apple logo on it...

Big tablet user here. I had an Anus fonepad 7" that was the nads till it got nicked. They'd stopped making that model so I replaced it with a Nexus 7 (sold by Google, made by Anus). Same number of pixels as your 50" telly, although i'm not entirely convinced HD makes that big a diff on a 7 screen. It's not the cheapest droid but it's still way cheaper than them apple things.

Problem is I think Google are now stopping the nexus too. So you should prolly ignore this post.

Nexus 7 user here, sound and not that pricey. But if as Monty says, they're not making them anymore, please ignore this post. Hope this has been useful, and not too chavvy.

I have the Tesco Hudl 1 and that's been pretty good for me. Takes forever to start up though. Once it does start up it runs at a reasonable speed without being fantastic and I can't recall it ever crashing.
I'm thinking of upgrading to the Hudl 2 very soon but need to read some reviews on it first though to see if it starts up any faster and runs any faster than the Hudl 1.
Overall I would say the Hudl is good value for money.

Oh, forgot to mention battery life. It lasts quite a while so if it's films you want to watch on it you'll be able to watch 2 or 3 films from one charge. I would expect the Hudl 2 to be even better than that too.

Apple like to tie you in to Apple everything so, for example, your media automatically goes through iTunes and if you try to put a different media player in it blocks it. Jailbreaking Apple stuff stops all that and lets you use non-Apple software.

For "jailbreaking an iThing" also read "rooting an Android thing".
Same difference. Lets you actually do as you like with the thing you bought instead of the maker having a veto.
Prolly best avoided if you're a non-geek like. A bricked tablet is no fun.

The problem with Rooting (and I assume jail-breaking) is that some apps wont work after you have rooted your android tablet.
I did it to my Hudl and Sky Go wouldn't run.
The only reason I rooted it was to get rid of the Tesco branding and then see what I could learn from it.
I ended up putting it back to normal a few weeks after.

To be fair kev, the only thing that stopped working on my Nexus after rooting was Sky Go, the rest was fine and the machine was a little better. Then it upgraded itself and it all went Pete Tong so back to unrooted. Funnily enough I never got round to putting Sky Go back on. Hmm, off to do that now while I think of it ...

I got one of the Hudl2s a few weeks ago, for £99 you can't really complain.
I put the Google Now launcher on and set that as the default to remove the Tesco crap instead of rooting it

On a related note does anyone have any recommendations for knock-off brand smartphones, unlocked? I see quite a few on Amazon, notably Jiake and Cubot. Looking for something under 50 snodgers, dual sim. Doesn't need to be feature-packed as I have the tablet for that.
