Anyone know the situation with Magnay? Official site says he was signed from Grimsby, and with Magnay having an impressive season I can't see them letting him go for nowt. Maybe a fee paid for him?!

28 page thread on the Grimsby board about him. Looks like his contract was up and they wanted him back but he'd rather play league football.

Ah. Well, we've brought 3 players in and it's only the 1st of June. Plus, these players have turned down other Clubs to sign for Pools. Ronnie is working wonders and I'm delighted with a player like Magnay coming in. A versatile player (can play centre-back or right-back), knows Michael Woods and Scott Fenwick as well it seems! Local lad, only born in Gateshead! My optimism is slowly but surely increasing.

At this rate we'll soon have a full team of our own.

More than pleased with that. A good player from a lower league on his way up.and full of confidence. I was amazed Gateshead let him go the other year, been an ever present in the 3rd place conference team in successive seasons.

My guess would be to play left back ahead of Austin

Austin has turned his offer of another paycut down and is going.

These days their doesnt seem a lot of difference from the conference to league 2 so i think it'll be a smooth transition for the lad, sounds highly rated by grimsby fans too, very positive signing this.

Another giant too, moore does like em big.

I would hardly call 6'1" a giant, it's prettying average height in pro football these days. From those clips as well he looks a good footballer and for defender very skilful.

Good signing.

It looks like a great bit of business - he's another one (like Woods and Fenwick) who had the early silver spoon treatment at a Premier League Academy, didn't make the grade first time but has now grafted his way back from non-league. These lads are hungry enough and young enough to kick on again at Hartlepool - hopefully with Hartlepool for a few years!

I would say he was arguably one of our best two players last season, I don't think he will have any problems playing in League 2, I woudn't be surprised if he could play higher to be honest.

I can't really blame him for moving back to the Durham area, he was commuting from Leeds everyday as it was.

Also I read average League 2 wages in 2013 was between £1,300 to £1,500 a week, I'm not exactly sure, I have seen the average wage been paid by Conference Premier sides is around £750/850 a week, but then you probally got the likes of Eastleigh, Forest Green Rovers paying players double that.

League 2 clubs receive an extra around 300K youth funding grant and at least 240K (2013/14 figures) for being in the league, this is the harsh thing of dropping out the league, although there's two years of parachute payments which equal a few hundred grand.

He has also played left back for us in a few games, although his best position is right back which he played for the majority of the season and as noted he can also play centre back.

Anyway good luck for next season, you have a decent player there.

From the 31 page thread on Grimsby messageboard "the Fishy" they've been waiting ages for him to make a decision. All the Grimsby players, who were only one kick away from promotion, were all handed a pay-cut. Wonder if there's anymore that Ronnie can snap up?

As for the likes of Austin aren't they out of contract today?

Response from a Grimsby supporting mate:

"Aaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrhhhhhhh !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

he's our player of the season and a fooking legend.

full back - class act and cult hero.

He lives in Leeds and we let 3 players go who he car-shared with so we made it expensive for him to stick around.

He's a Gateshead lad

You'll love him.

gutted"

reminds me of when we signed Nelson, very promising clappp clappp

I hope he plays as well as he speaks in that interview above.

Very interesting, once you get past the first bit about Grimsby's defeat in the final, about life in the lower leagues.

Agree.

The bit of sour grapes from a Grimsby fan about them passing us on the way up as we're going down next season ain't happening though - it's already shaping up for a top half finish for Ronnie Moore's Blue and White Army - as long as he remembers to sign a goalkeeper!

Wonder if he was at Chelsea same time as Woods? Might have had a bearing on the move if they were as I suspect.

Good signing, I mentioned Magnay as a possible target for us along with Craig Disley (who has since signed a new deal for Grimsby) and Lenell John-Lewis who has signed for L2 Newport.

Seen Magnay a few times with Gateshead, one of many players too good for the Conference, he and James Marwood sttod out for them a season or two back. Austin will go now as Magnay looks to be his replacement ??

He contradicts himself so much in that interview that it's hard to listen too.

Sounds a promising signing like, a 6ft1 right back? Will be good for those troublesome LDB!!

To the Grimsby fan, what's his best asset then? Presuming he don't push forward too much which is what Moore wants? Strong in air? Presuming not the quickest due to the bad injuries?

Contradicted yes, but I thought he was just trying to skirt round the obvious fact that he was probably going but nothing sorted at that time without giving anything specific away. I thought he did it quite well and and sounded honest.

Works for me. If you go on youtube and search for "Carl Magnay 2014 2015 Highlights" it's the first vid.

Looks like a good player, I'm happy with the signings made so far. Keep 'em coming Ron!

He is very good mates with Fenwick. Both from Gateshead and Magnay came to watch Fenwick in his trial game for Pools against Gateshead at Billy Town in November. Plus he also played for Chelsea alongside Woods. This must have helped his decision, plus it will hopefully help instil the strong spirit within the squad that Ronnie has talked about.

Don't think we will have paid anything for him as he only signed a 1 year contract with Grimsby last year and is therefore a free agent come 1st July I imagine.

Certainly happy with ronnie's signings and that is 3 of 9 he wanted so far. Still pretty sure we'll try to get Dolan, along with at least 1 more full back, a centre back and least 1 goalkeeper. And still need wingers. Good to get early business done tho

Refers to Ronnie as a 'great character' so you know he's worked under Brendan Rodgers.
