Well done Yogi Bear - really pleased for him. Never got anything like the credit he deserved when he was here. Glad things have worked out for him....

He did absolutely fantastic while he was here whilst never being allowed to sign a single player. You could learn all you need to know about the man when you hear the passion in his voice. The man sacked from Pools for having too much ambition.

Scottish manager of the season. Inverness' highest ever position, Scottish FA cup winner and leading then into the Europa League. Well done Yogi!

I can think of a couple of people who should be squirming if they read that last post......but I bet they wouldn't.

Congrats Yogi. Have they sold that striker who was banging them in for fun last season?

He's obviously a decent manager but the SPL these days is League One at the very best.

Inverness v Falkirk?

In terms of size of club I'd say Rochdale v Dagenham. That's the Scottish Cup Final.

Mind the fact he can build a winning team on a tiny budget does highlight the fact he could have done a really good job at Pools had he been given any sort of chance to.

I explained the background to this to the wife and she said....." ridiculous, if we'd kept him we could have been the ones who won the Scottish Cup"

I never really bonded with him when he was at Pools which says a lot more about my judgement than his abilities as a Manager. Clearly he could have been a legend at Hartlepool had his employers actually took his calls and spoken to him. Well done Mr Hughes!

I'm not sure he could have taken Pools anywhere. With a half-decent squad maybe, but I really can't see where that squad would have come from.
Getting the boot from Pools probably did him more good than harm.

If Hughes had been the manager at Pools for the full season in league one we would not have been relegated. He took over a team that had 8 points from 17 games, a team that was a mess and managed to get 33 points from the 29 that he was in charge of. I think his only signing was Charlie Wyke. He obviously knew what he was doing.

The suggestion that you need to chuck money about to be successful is not completely true. It's only a hunch but I reckon that Hughes would have got more from the players he had and would have been able to draft in better players than what Colin Cooper did. Lets see how well Moore does this year with a similar budget - pushing for play offs I reckon.

As you say things have worked out well for him and he deserves it, things have now worked out for Pools with us having Ronnie but I'm still a little peeved about the way Hughes was treated by Pools. If Pools had gone down then getting rid of Hughes would have looked like one of the stupidest footballing decisions ever......

TBH when he arrived Hartlepol a couple of mates in Scotland said he was a waste of space although never got the chance to prove it one way or another. You can't compare the Leagues in Scotland to England as there is no money, Pools get bigger crowds than some of the Premier League clubs up there.

Yogi was a good 'un and I'm chuffed for him. But at Pools he was a) pretty openly ridiculed by the "first choice manager" nonsense, b) surrounded by staff who got us into the predicament in the first place, c) not called Chris Turner, and d) taken the piss out of when he wanted to discuss improving the team. This tells me he was never going to be the right person for Pools.

He had a team destined for relegation playing good football. His interviews were like a book of football clichés but he clearly knows what he's doing. Great appointment, terrible backing.

His treatment was shameful but people have some serious selective memory of that season. Some of the stuff towards the end of the season was dreadful, we went 8 games without scoring at one point. He did alright with his hand tied behind his back but I good football is pushing it somewhat.

I'm sure the lack of goals had more to do with the lack of strikers. Maybe my memory isn't what it used to be but I seem to remember we weren't that far from a decent team. With a few additions, as Hughes requested too publicy for Kim Jong Hodcroft, we'd have been far more comfortable the following season.

Every thread with opinions about a few seasons ago ends with PJ saying 'that's shite'

I haven't said its shite. I just remember this board towards the end of that season and the bloke being ridiculed for talking in riddles. Not many, if any were saying what a fantastic manager he was. That is being done in hindsight. I imagine you were one of people mocking him.

I'll dig out a few threads if you want?

I think the majority of people could see that he was doing a decent job and it wasn't hard to understand what brand of football he was trying to impose.

This poll after the season ends possibly disproves the hindsight argument.

I think the vast majority thought he was doing a decent job Jonny as he was but the bigger picture was not John Hughes, the problem wasn't John Hughes and the problem at the club still isn't the manager. A point you have missed constantly for years. I was one of the people defending Hughes when he was being slaughtered.

Surely now you can see that?

But the general feeling, correctly, at the time was he had no chance of being able to do that at Pools. He was a dead man walking and that was clear from about March.

Also that thread was after we'd beat Tranmere 1-0 away, after beating Bury the week before. Before that we'd gone 8 games without a goal and a win. We weren't playing much good football, he was picking Howard at the time as well so I doubt you thought we were playing good stuff then!! He got us organised and competive, about as much he could have done at the time grabted but the football was defensive and attritional, at times it was awful.

The difference between the two situations was it is acceptable for Pools to be relegated from League One. Green and Hodcroft could easily pass the buck when that happened as Pools even in League One= punching above our weight. Going out of the League would have been them breaking new ground for shittness in our history. The pair of them were crapping themselves I'd imagine so had to back the manager to some extent.

They made no attempt to keep us in League One. They used a bloke who was desperate for a chance in England paid him as little as possible (600 bar a week) then dumped him laughably blaming the performance in one game.

Yes, they sold Billy McKay in the January window to Wigan. He's going to have a big job on his hands this summer too. Losing quite a few of the team that has been together for a few seasons now. He's done a tremendous job with the resources he's got up there.

Even more impressive then as got impression he was the main reason for their good form.

Daft as it sounds, could be a good time for Hughes to walk if players are to leave etc. Will surely get a hob based on this season and cant see him replicating it or bettering it next season.

Cant see them getting past the europa league qualifiers tbh.

Could prob get a job at a decent league one/bottom end championship team.
