I have no sympathy for them. They hounded a good manager out of the club in Pardew then when they realised he wasn't the problem they've turned on Ashley who is running the club well (financially). He's brought in players and sold them on for a tidy profit - plenty of clubs do that.

You talk to a Borer fan, usually less so and can be ambivalent.. but you mention Pools to a Geordie and you'll get a response like "how can you watch shite like that".

I'd love nothing more to see the fuckers go down this Saturday, not just for the above, but also to see Hull stay up and for me to net a cool £182 out of it (backed them at 90/1 to go down in February.

From a business sense the club is well ran. When he took it over they were £200 million in debt and in serious danger of becoming the next Portsmouth or Rangers.

He's so detached from the fan base though he makes Hodcroft look like the Peterborough chairman.

The Pardew out campaign was so thick it was untrue they forced a bloke out of the club who on the face of things was doing a decent job. Exactly what Ashley wanted, mid table safe rake in the TV coin. He'll probably blame them (privately as he can't speak, I've never heard him speak anyway) if they go down!!

Can't stand Newcastle myself. Much like others on here, for me, it's their deluded belief that they are a big club and that statement above about 'mediocrity' sums it up. Being in the Premiershit at all should be seen as overachievement. They never win anything, or come close.

No issues with Sunderland at all and chuffed they stayed up....and also chuffed that they regularly beat the cartoon army.

To be fair I'm not sure you can say the team with the countries third biggest average attendance is 'overachieving' in terms of fanbase they are a big club and probably shouldn't be sitting fourth bottom of the League with millions in the bank.

You can see why the fans are pissed off, but some of them are deluded and thick, quite a lot of them actually.

Given how little they achieve and how many still turn up though thick and thin, they have rather solid grounds for claiming they have the best supporters any club could wish for.
There again, given how long they have been flogging the same dead horse, you might argue they are also the thickest. Especially those who travel from Hartlepool to flog it.

A big fanbase doesn't equal success and never has done. (Pompey being a prime example - with their following they should've strolled to the title).

Juventus' average attendance for 2013-14 was 37,318.

Juve are on a different planet to Newcastle and yet their following is much smaller.

For me, whether a club is classed as a big club is largely as a result of their history, not their fanbase - of course the fanbase plays a part, but only a small part hence why Newcastle are not a big club. (IMHO)

I wouldn't say Juventus have a much smaller following they have a smaller stadium. I'd imagine Juve have a larger global fan base than Newcastle as they are historically more successful.

Newcastle are a big club whatever way you look at it, they are the 18th richest football club in the World look at this list;

It's all down to individual interpretation of what constitutes 'big' at the end of the day and we'll all give different criteria different weightings so we're unlikely to agree.

My own scale is heavily weighted towards their past (and by past I mean reasonable living memory) as well as success.

On the link you provided the likes of Ajax, PSV, Roma and Benfica (to name four) don't even feature yet West Ham do?!

I feel a bit for John Carver he seems a decent man who has started to be ridiculed.

Where I work its a pretty even split of Geordies and Mackems, and it is true the Geordies take the p!ss once they hear I support Pools, and say stuff like "i cant believe you pay money to watch that garbage" just proper arrogant stuff. Mackems very supportive and a few have actually came down to one or 2 games at the Vic, and loved it, and plan to next season a lot more.

I am all for NE clubs doing well to a point, but my own personal experiences with the Geordies tells me I'm not assed with them one bit..
