Thinking of switching to a diesel as presuming I will save on fuel.

If I'm currently doing 260 miles per week in an unleaded car which is 36mpg.

How much would I save doing same miles in say a 60mpg diesel?

Iv no idea what fuel prices are at minute etc and am shit at maths.

Cheers

I have a Qashqai diesel and get around 50-53mpg. It costs around £56 to fill the tank up and I get between 550 and 600 miles out of a full tank.

You only get a benefit if you do 30,000 ayear, petrol 6p a litre cheaper, keep petrol.

It depends on lots of factors. You will have generally a bigger outlay buying a diesel car against petrol. So it depends on whether you buy a new or used car. I drive diesel because I do 40000 miles a year but with you it is difficult to say. Will you be saving on car tax switching from petrol?

that's possibly the daftest thing I've ever read.

EDIT: unless of course you're talking brand new, in which case it might not be

Newer petrols are nearly as economical, don't pollute as much and aren't going to be subject to higher taxes in the near future.

I have a diesel and wish I'd never bothered.

Yeah was going to say we have Diesel and only pay £30 Car Tax.

Does it really make a difference these days, everything costs a fucking fortune. Diesel or Petrol it will cost shit loads to fill it up and won't last very long.

The straight answer to your question is quite a lot

Current cost: £1963 per annum
Future cost: £1229 per annum

Thats assuming your mpg is correct and a fuel cost of £1.15 petrol and £1.20 diesel which is there or there abouts.

All that said, theres little to choose in terms of new cars between petrol and diesel. If you're not buying new then stick to diesel.

Also to factor in are maintenance costs. Diesel cars cost more to service and have to cope with very high internal pressures . They have components that are designed to make them more like petrol engines but can be very problematic and expensive if they go wrong, particularly if you do lots of short journies, which a diesel engine is not good at doing. Anyone who has replaced a dual mass fly wheel, or EGR or DPF or injectors could tell you this. So, if you do enough miles and long journies then diesel will pay off, if not it might break your heart and your bank balance.

I am now losing money every time I put an expenses claim in at work.

I drive a VW Passat Estate (Blue Motion) Diesel.

It costs me £60 to fill the tank up and I get 600 miles.

Our "rate" is 8.7p plus VAT per mile.

Its a fucking JOKE. It costs me to do Site Visits.

You can claim the tax back on the difference from hmrc. Their allowance is 45p first 10000 and 25p a mile after that.

Do you pay tax on the difference above 10000 miles?

This is true.

I put in a claim when I was working at West Burton in Nottinghamshire, did nearly 20,000 miles in a year. All of the teesside lads down there were claiming back VAT on the travel.

It's cheaper than petrol nearly everywhere in Europe. The governments think it has a lower carbon hoofprint so they tax it less.
But the difference is coming down. In France it used to be something like 2/3 of the price of petrol.
Your local friendly Esclat supermarket sells it way cheaper, and cheaper still if you have whatever their Tesco club card is called.
But I don't think the chain exists outside Catalonia.

It used to be cheaper here until the government twigged to the popularity. The difference is in other countries people protest, we just lay down and take it.
