Going to work at your and stranded on a1 my car Audi a4 gears stuck in neutral was driving in 6th then it said I was in fourth and then kept changing what gear I was in on dashboard mean while loosing revs so bad to pull over. Now after turning engine off and back on it won't recognise gears. Is the gear box fucked?

I'm not a mechanic but something is certainly fucked Compo, hopefully not your gear box. Bad news but it sounds like an AA or RAC job to me.

Cable could of gone, don't know a lot about it to be fair but I know that if the cables goes, the gear stick will move freely but select nothing.
