Genuine question as it was (just) before my time. But I have always heard Pools fans saying how much they dislike Boro or have not forgiven them for 86.

My basic understanding is that we let them use the Vic for a game, we kept the gate receipts and then they moved back. What happened that pissed us off so much about it?

The boro had gone into liquidation and tbe gates to ayresome park were locked.
Cant remember the full story but know pools let them use the vic to fullfill the fixture on the first day of 86 season v port vale about an hour after we played cardiff at home.

A lot of crowd trouble that day with the cardiff fans ripping seats out in the millhouse stand and pools n boro fans fighting near the odeon just after pools game.

Im sure if boro didnt fullfill that fixture then they would of been expelled from the league.

So the favour from pools should never be forgotten.
Probably one of the reasons why Colin Cooper got quite a few loanies from the boro.

The boro will make millions if they go up.
Will Steve Gibson remember 1986 and donate a few quid to pools so we can sign some decent players.
I doubt it!

I'd like to think Boro or any other club for that matter would have helped us out if we were in the same position. It will never be forgotten what the club did for them (I'd like to think) but I certainly wouldn't say that is a reason for the dislike.

It pisses me off that they take some many Hartlepool lads into there academy but then maybe that just a jealousy thing and I guess you can't blame the lads for wanting to play for a bigger club confised

In the last few years they have lent us Dolan, Williams, Wyke, Brobbel, and Boro born lads Joe Ironside and Jordan Hugill probably only agreed to come here because they're from the area, so let's not be too critical.
My beef is with the Boro old-guard - Cooper, Hignett, Parnaby and Bates who did their level best to take us out of the league.

For me it's a combination of things about the Boro, mainly years of listening Pools coverage on Radio Cleveland or lack of it because we had to listen to that annoying crank Alistair Brownlee getting his chopper out everytime they get a corner. It's still annoying now have you heard Neil Maddison? The bloke sounds like he's suffered a serious head injury just before being put on air.

Also it's people from Hartlepool who jumped on the Smoggie band wagon during the 90's. Many were seen crawling from the woodwork last night and are now dusting down their red Cellnet tops with Emerson on the back for a trip to Wembley. I especially hope for those people they lose 12-0 in the final and that train strike lasts the entire weekend. Even the thought of these people is making sick in the mouth.

I seem to recall that Borer approached Darlo first to use DeFeethams and got turned down! Probably due to the cricket club not wanting the boot boys stamping over their precious cricket pitch.

I've no special fondness for the Boro. Apart from watching them a couple of times when I was in my teens (the guy I was apprenticed to at ICI was a fan), I've never had any time for them.
But I think it's a bit petty to bang on about something that happened thirty fucking years ago and was hardly any skin off our nose. Did they forget to pay someone to repair the divots or something?

From the limited bits I've seen of Boro play this season I say good luck to them....their Manager has got them playing really good proper football!!!!
And sat near a few Boro supporters v Cambridge who were genuinely hoping we stayed up and absolutely loved the game and atmosphere at Pools!!!!
I've mellowed in my dislike of Boro for those reasons!!!! (Sorry Snowy)!!!! :-D

Any hooligan who attacks a non hooligan is not a proper hooligan if that makes any sense.

Something to do with the code of conduct..
How times have changed if u wore u colours in the 80,s u were askin for trouble.
Now u wear them to say u dont want any bother.

I feel nauseous, the Boro prayer!? Nothing to do with 86 this is why. Alistair Brownlee is why

Didn't they used to have 1986 on their badge but has since changed it?

Apparently Boro wouldn't pay the police bill for thier game & Pools had to stump it up.
That's the main reason for the dislike.

Apparently nobody has a problem with them borrowing our ground these days though.

Someone came up with the bright idea of playing the games pretty much back to back on a Saturday afternoon. As has been said there had already been trouble before and during the Pools game. As we were leaving the ground from the Rink End near where the Corner Flag is now, we walked straight into the Boro fans waiting to get in for their game.

We were pretty much ambushed in the area where the skate park is, a few stood and fought but must of us legged it. Thankfully I was pretty sharp on my feet and managed to get away round the back of the Odeon and down into Murray Street, but there was loads of lads with no interest in fighting who got a real good kicking.

It wasn't a hooligan vs hooligan thing, they were just going for anyone, and it looked to me like they had planned it.

Obviously given we had let them use their ground and pretty much saved their bacon, folk where pretty hacked off at being attacked by way of thanks. And I'm not just talking about a few lads here, there was at least 200 of the fuckers.
it's my first memory of a Pools game as a 6 year old. I remember being in the millhouse end, walking out towards near where the cornerflag is now. Asked my dad if I could go to the toilet. I remember pissing up the wall (a la York City a few weeks ago ) when bricks started flying over the top. my dad just grabbed me and ran

I have no recollection of the game, just the shenanigans after.

Horrible club. At least boro and Norwich can compare how many fingers they've all got on wembley way.

Good quiz question. Which football league ground has hosted two matches on the same day? Even when clubs have ground shared, I don't think they have played on the same day. Anywhere other than the Vic ? sctatchinghead

First of all, I have no gripe whatsoever with boro fans ( providing they're not from here)...I went to college there for five years and they were a good crowd to knock about with, end of.
My problem was with the way local radio was taken over by he whose name I can't speak and it became embarassingly boro centric. Another was Cleveland County Council who seemed to have a department dedicated to shutting Pools down while at the same time busting a gut to get the Riverside open (who did pay for that by the way?) Oh, and the idiot suggestion we groundshare with them..as if
We also have to consider the Premiership effect.... the Premiership is in love with itself and all football, excluding the bigger clubs in the Championship, an utter irrelevance.
Therefore, as the fan base spectrum is getting alarmingly dimmer and easily attracted to the bright lights of the Premiership ( it's all about image and perception) the lower clubs will start to wane in importance. Who wants to watch boring old league crap ( in their eyes) when the promised land of the Premiership is available down the road.
The Premiershipis a vacuum cleaner, it sucks up everyhting it can as a right .
It's not about the fans, it's about the body corporate and ambition.
Not a problem for us ambition though.

Crowd trouble in 1921.. interesting, never thought of people kicking off in those times.

Wasn't that when you and the borers where playing in Div 3.....? I remeber hearing it on BBC Radio Cleveland....... for the record, despite it being two local teams in the stations area, the commentators were the boro lot and it was treat as an away game. A bit like us playing them and our regular radio coverage regulars gets the bullet and the boro lot replace them...staggering arrogance.

And another thing..... when the borers were playing at Eindhoven in the EUFA cup, I turned up at Teesside Airport at daft o'clock in the morning to find it infested by boro supporters flying out, they were everywhere...as I went through I was pulled over by security and searched, frisked, shoes off, pockets turned out and then after a whispered conversation asked why I wasn't wearing a boro shirt when flying out to Holland.
I then informed them that I wasn't flying to Holland if they read the ticket.
I was informed that hooligans tend not to wear club colours....cheers.

This has only happened at one other ground: Old Trafford

Man Utd v Derby and Stockport v Leicester in 1921. Edgeley Park was closed for the last match of the season following crowd trouble.

Rugby League on the other hand has one "Magic" weekend every season where all that week's Superleague marches are played in succession on the same ground.
In fact the 2015 Magic Weekend is in two weeks' time and it's at, of all places, Barcode Allotments.
