Iain Wright as held on to the Hartlepool seat despite massive advances from Ukip.

At stages in the count, the result had seemed neck-and-neck, but Labour held tight in the town.

In the end, Labour took 14,076 votes to Ukip’s 11,052.

The people of Hartlepool have made their bed by yet again voting this man in, all I can say is I'm glad I never voted for him.

Too many candidates which split the vote in Wrights favour, won't see or hear from him for another five years, off down the smoke again. He has no interest in local politics or Hartlepool, only interested in feathering his own nest !

As said, too many runners and riders.
Statistically speaking, %65 of the electorate voted for another candidate.
But even so, 14000 odd people voted for Wright....we deserve all we get...

I just hope local wards voted against Labour, but then again we are talking about Hartlepool.

Shame on you if you voted him in.

Shame on you? And the alternative was?

Oh yes, UKIP. And what good would that have done, bearing in mind the rest of country has snubbed them.

So that would have left Kenneths choice.

So I ask again. What was the alternative?

It's not the SNP that Cameron will have to worry about, it's the shenanigans he'll get from his own back benchers.
Not to mention the fact that every media gadgie worth his/her salt will be breaking their necks to get Vince Cable and Danny Alexander to spill the beans on the scale of cutbacks proposed by the Tories now that the coalition shackles have been taken off.
Gonna be interesting, especially when the referendum on Europe rears it's head. If the support for UKIP remains growing at the current rate, we will be out of Europe, especially as the "out" campaign will have the backing of a considerable number of backbench Tory MP's.
Then we'll see how good Cameron's control is.

But Labours figureheads are still claiming it was a superb campaign. They are more deluded than the TBE.

Ed Balls will probably be looking for another seat, so maybe Mr Wright will be asked to stand down.
It would be interesting watching Hodcroft take him on.
That's what the Town needs, a high profile, hard hitting gadgie with a brain and Ballsy fits that category.

The European referendum will go the same way as the Jock one, even if the question is an unequivocal "in or out" (it's just as likely to be "Europe's orite innit?: Yes [ ] No [ ]").
The Tories have understood something no other government in Europe has since Czechoslovakia. To keep potential separatists on your side, give them a fucking voice.
And then if they want out anyway, what's the point trying to keep them in.

Once that's out of the way maybe the UKIP will fuck off for once and for all and we'll be able to make a serious choice at election time.

The rest of the country has snubbed UKIP? So they're not the 3rd most popular party?

getting 10% of the vote and claiming they are popular is a bit weird.

Most people voted for them to try and get rid of someone else. Not because they are popular.

And if only one in ten only voted for them, I sincerely hope they dont think that entitles them to any power.

No they've got 10% of the 66% who voted so its nearer 6% tbh .. Ironic that more people decided not to vote at all than voted for the winners.. So much for democracy..

Does anybody detect a mild regional bias in the results?

It's actually 1 in 8 and, as you know, it's all relative.

A party whom 64% of the electorate didn't vote for but has a seat majority is popular, is it?

Farage definitely chose the wrong seat to contend.
If he had stood here I think he would have won.
Not the first bad decision he has made.
And No, I did not vote for him. Neo-Fascism is not my thing.

I also think that the Hartlepool electorate probably made the only decision they could, in view of the number of candidates.
I personally threw my vote away on an independent because my conscience would not let me vote Labour, Tory or Ukip.

My reasoning was that I believed that Wrighty was going to win anyway and that if enough people did the same and he was returned on a much reduced majority, then the guy might just get the message and PULL HIS BLOODY FINGER OUT.

To be fair, if Labour aren't in power it doesn't matter which Labour MP gets in for Hartlepool. It's not like he can pull any Tory strings.

Riots about what?

What is there to riot about?

Most of whats gone wrong in Hartlepool is down to Labour.

Lets riot against the opposition.

"Knowsley, Westminster, Hackney in east London, then Liverpool, Blackpool, Hartlepool, Manchester, Newham in east London and Middlesbrough."

Austerity cuts introduced by Cameron most hit the already poor areas... the least hit area is a posh part of Surrey.

That's what!

Locally Labour gain 3 more seats in the local elections, we deserve all we get, and an other acker- belcher joining the party.

it absolutely stinks to the core.

Well unlike you, I predict that the EU referendum will be underwhelming.
The uncertainty caused by the Jock neverendum must have had a 000.1% effect on the economy.

And as far as surveillance is concerned you overestimate your fellow Briton. Most people don't care about being stalked by the government and won't care until they suddenly realise 1984 was only postponed.

Why change a winning formula. Viva Status Quo. And keep believing that there's a political party that actually cares about anything other than gaining and staying in power. It's not like 90% of the population can be arsed or owt.

Shut the fuck up with your politics I'm trying to see what's on telly.
