Enjoyed that last night, good footage of some 70's flair players.

Anyone else see it?

80's next time with hoddle etc.

This country really doesnt know how to handle players with a bit of flair.

scandalous just how few international caps those players got between them.

And to think they played during the time england failed to qualify for the world cup twice.

Only in england.....

Show boat footballers and the people at the top didn't think they were the politically correct players to play for England, big mistake, we will never see the likes of them again, fantastic individual footballers.

Try asking Worthington, Hoddle, Marsh or Currie to track back and see what the reaction would be.
A fuck right off would be what you'd get.

I believe you may have got the same reaction from Pele, Garrincha, Rivelino, Gerson, Kempes and any number of flamboyant players with world cup medals to their name.

Why would you want players as good as that to track back?

Did managers ask zidane to track back?

Did they shite, they made a system that got the best out of them, n let others do the tracking back for them.

Its the english disease.

Nowhere else on this planet could someone like Graham Taylor get to be national manager.

Even Bobby Robsons legend makes no comment on the fact that he didnt want to pick Paul Gascoigne. He was forced to.

Or the fact during the world cup of 1986, Robsons first choice was 4 4 2 with Htaely upfront and no place for Beardsley or Hoddle.

Only an injury to Bryan Robson, and a suspension for Ray wilkins, and Hateley being bobbins forced Robson to change. And then, amazingly, England looked good.

Agreed, joe cole was the closest we've had since gazza in the last 10 years, he got shoved on the wing too, probs didnt 'track back' enough.

Concurring with the dibbs, it's a disease in this country, a nation that loves a grafter.

I tell you what, watch Bayern v Barcelona tonight and name one midfielder who doesn't get back to put the opposition under pressure when his team don't have the ball.

Agree with this yubep. Players like Joe Cole should have a team built around them, not just slotted in.

I watched him play for West Ham at Boro years ago and he was unplayable, he went off before the end of the game and got a standing ovation from the Boro fans. England should definitely got more use out of him.

As the colonel says, Robson never wanted to play Beardsley and Lineker together. He was forced to which turned him into a genius. A nice honest and genuine guy but I think the legend is slightly more than the reality.

Rodney Marsh tells a great story about when he was a big money signing from QPR to Man City.

Things didn't work out between him and Malcolm Allison and Marsh wasn't playing well, so in the team talk before one game Big Mal says

"Look Rodney, I want you to give it maximum effort for 45 minutes then I'll pull you off at half time."

Quick as a flash, Marsh says,

"Thanks boss, at QPR we only got a cup of tea and an orange!"

Have heard the story about Stan Bowles knocking the FA Cup off the table at Joker Park, 40,000 in there, few days after the 73 cup win, nearly started a riot, fans on the pitch, match delayed etc

To be fair Joe Cole won 56 England caps. Since you

he did his cruciate about 7 years ago he's not been the same player and never been a real regular at club level. Had he stayed at the level he was at during his Chelsea days before the injury he'd have went on to get a 100 caps. He was quality before.

Stanley was magic. An opportunist on the pitch, he was no slouch off it. In the 70s he once played with an adidas boot on one foot and a Gola boot on the other and got paid by both companies.

Watched it on catch up yesterday, good programme brought back a lot of memories. Did you see the tackles flying in, in them days, brutal!!! And they just got on with it. Shows how soft the players are now they wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes in the 70's.

I don't think players are soft now they just blatantly cheat which is the most annoying aspect of modern day football for me. Hate it.
