Any advice on what train to get on Saturday?
Is it best to buy a ticket in advance for the train?

I don't know about prices but pools put some information on and it had train times to get if that helps.

Depends where you are departing from. If it's Hartlepool I suspect price is same on day as it would be in advance. Just look on national rail site (google it)

Train out of Hartlepool at about 9 ish to get the 1022 across to Carlisle. The later trains likely to be rammed with shoppers and mackems getting on at Seaham.....

There will be extra coaches added so I've been informed.

Noticed when I went to get the train to London this morning they had signs up warning people that the trains will be rammed, think it said the return fare was about 27 bar, which is extortionate given the state of the trains and the length of time it takes.

Think you probably looking at the thick end of 3 hours there, and the same back.

I was up Haltwhistle the other week and it is a torturous journey on them boneshaker trains. You can either change at Hexham or Newcastle, but there's usually a good gap between connections, though I did manage to get a direct service back.

Last time I went there on the train for a match we got a police escort from the ground all the way to the station and the train got bricked as it was pulling out.

Can imagine the first train back on Saturday night will be chocker like.

I did that journey two or three times a month when I was living in Carlisle a few years back. It's brutal. Still, I would rather have done that than hang around there. A week in Carlisle is like month anywhere else.

I work on the railways, there is now a special train in the timetable, direct to Carlisle

Leaves Hartlepool 1030 arrives Carlisle 1228,this runs direct and doesn't call at Newcastle.Coming back leaves Carlisle 1752 direct to Hartlepool arriving 1947.

You might want to confirm with Northern Rail, see there is no mention of this train on the official site.it is also on http://www.realtimetrains.co.uk
