Are these players are on trial at Scunthorpe or for us? I'm confused.

They also have Callum Chippendale on loan from Bradford.

Pooliebabe should have informed us of this.

Not sure if you follow sweaty footy or not but QoS are doing rather well at the moment.
Maybe we should be looking whether they have any trialists to send us.

Wonder if there's ever been a player in Scotland actually with the surname Trialist and first initial A. That would be hilarious...

He genuinely is, god knows how he has wangled that one. He made David Foley look like Peter Crouch.

Does anyone know if Scunthorpe signed any of these trialists?

We need answers.

I got a bit lost in our flurry of pre-season activity. Did we actually sign any of our trialists? And while we're there can anyone explain why trialist has one L and medallist has two?

because trialist has a diphthong and medalist doesn't? I may be wrong, but I think the length of the vowel sound makes a difference to the single/double letter 'rule'.

'Triallist' is the spelling given first in my dictionary. 'Trialist' is given as an alternative but probably the reason it's gained currency is because it's used mainly by football people who are notoriously bad spellers.

In a similar vein 'medallist' is 'medalist' in the US of A because they can't spell either. Apart from that, I don't know whether we signed any trialists or not.

Trialist is the spelling in American English of course. We're a couple of generations in to every spellcheck being set to US English as the default, so there's not much hope for British English.

Color me gray (with no problems for The Bunker spellcheck!)

Re Americanese......I once had a job that involved looking up old church records, from an era before spelling was standardised. Took ages, at first, to decipher some of the entries and the same word would often be spelt several different ways, though each variation was perfectly justified, phonetically.

I thought there was a certain charm to that....unlike the American way of totally misspelling words and then sticking to their initial mistake through thick and thin ;)

Spelling with a single L was a conscious decision by a certain lexicographer called Webster. When it comes down to it, spelling is just a way of representing speech so the only time it really, really matters is when distinguishing homonyms, or rather homophones; things like "yer after laugh".
In defence of trialist, you can find the word tribalist in most dictionaries, but you won't find triballist.

I see that their 'marquee' signing from the effing Borer, Luke Williams is out for at least three months - yet another ex-Borer sicknote
