My better half is flying out to Dubai tomorrow to see her daughter (who now works our there). Her daughter has asked to take some bacon and other bits n Bob's. But as Dubai is Muslim state are you allowed to take pork.

Anyone had any recent experience of taking such items.

Taking food through any airport can be dodgy buts it nothing to do with it being Muslim. Just vacuum pack it and you'll be fine I'd have thought. The worst that will happen is they take it off her but I really can't see it. Pork isn't illegal it's just they don't eat it. I'm sure you'll find it on plenty of menus and the like. Alcohol is pretty much readily available isn't it as are prostitutes from all corners of the globe for hypocritical Arab men to bang senseless (so I hear)

I love travelling but it's somewhere I've never had any desire to visit.

Why do you need to take bacon anyway? They have Western supermarkets that sell it.

It's something her daughter has asked her to take over. Think it costs a fortune. Better half only going for four nights n has been asked to take hot chocolate jaffa cakes toileteries etc as western products/luxuries are ridiculously costly.

Thanks for replies though.

Everything costs a fortune there doesn't it!?

As I say I'm sure you'd be fine but taking meat through airports is a no a no anyway in most cases and its nothing to do with religion. Also I once took a shit load of Heroin through Dubai without any bother.

Dubai isn't bad, well worth a visit. Was cheap as chips there too. A bit like going to Egypt but a lot nicer and you don't get harassed when looking in a shop window!

I'm sure it is nice I just prefer visiting real places.

The whole hypocrisy of the place I don't like either. Gay people aren't allowed, couples not married can't share a bed, no holding hands showing flesh or kissing in public.

Human trafficking for cheap (almost slave) labour and the rife prostitution industry? Not a problem.

Awful part of the World.

Fair enough that like, been to much better places over the years but I thought it was a good experience going there. Prefer heading west than east anyway.

I was in Dubai for 5 nights two weeks ago and couldn't get away with the place. Sterile and completely soulless. Not for me, and won't be hurrying back. Oman, on the other hand, was absolutely beautiful and full of character. Felt I was in the real Middle East.

I lived in Qatar for three years - if you want 'real' Middle East, don't go to Dubai, Bahrain or Doha (maybe try Iran....and good luck).

Probably worth a look though even if just to say you gave it a try or you get a decent deal - plus you're guaranteed the sun.

Good for laying around a pool, five star hotels and shopping....errr and that's about it.

Don't believe all you hear about these places either - some of it isn't that bad, some of it is probably worse.

With regards to the bacon - get your local butcher to pack it for you and label it turkey bacon, should be ok.

There was nothing better than some smuggled pork sausages on the bbq, with a cold beer while in the middle of the desert...apart from not being there that is!

Can never believe Brits, they always complain that immigrants here don't integrate, eat their own food etc. bit hypocritical that the first things Brits do when they go abroad is want to import their food. Spanish culture was was ruined by Brits, English Breakfast and a pint of Carling. Get a life and sample the local food.

Heard mixed reports about India, usually the bad ones include dehli belly. I do intend heading further that way at some point in the next few years, probably Thailand :)

India was like hell on earth when I visited. I landed in Mumbai and travelled for 4 hours by car and I think I was almost killed on the roads 354 times. People and food were very nice. Was Harrowing sitting on the runway looking out of the window ad the slums and the kids picking through the litter. Great experience but will be very happy if I never go back.

It's a massive culture shock when you first get there but you need to give it more time than that. The poverty and begging is shocking at first but you do get used to it. I remember getting there at about three in the morning and from Mumbai airport to where we were staying in Colaba we must have passed tens of thousands of people asleep on the pavement. I was like 'what the fuck'

I did about six weeks there starting in Mumbai, then Jaipur, Agra, Varanasi, Calcutta (where I saw an India v Pakistan test match at Eden Gardens) and Chennai all on the train. Amazing experience one of the best of my life and before visiting I had a few reservations.

The scran is unbelievable as well.

Get your butcher to label the pork up as venison. Thats how I manage to get it into Saudi. Only had a slap on the wrist once and to my dismay they took my rashers away!!!

O
So we built all the motorways, railways etc, their infrastructure, leisure facilities are far superior to the UK and cheaper to use, not funded by Tourism but by EU money, they knew how to work the system, ok they were bankrupt but we do goody Britain bailed them out via the EU.Our national debt is over 3 trillion quid far more than any other European country. Hey we might have won the war but they are screwing us now.
On the food side, I am not telling you what to eat, just the fact the majority of Brits are not prepared to sample local food. I have had the opportunity to travel and work abroad and the first thing I do is sample the local dishes, never been disappointed although never sampled the deep fried chicken feet in Asia. Obesity is a huge problem in particular with kids due to their poor diet and lack of exercise in the UK, never seen many fat kids on the Med or Asia.

I agree about the roads, but India is a great place to visit...especially if you know someone there to guide you around!

The food is definitely worth the visit and no bad guts while I was there.

I went to an IPL cricket match too which was something else.
