Wow. Just wow. I'm not overly politically correct but this is a bit of an own goal, especially when considering how many utter drunken divs (see York) we still have following us. Bound to be trouble from this.

Almost as worrying as the idea itself is the number of people, some who I know to be very articulate and intelligent lads, condoning the whole thing.

Apart from those who don't like the fancy dress at all.

How do people feel about the dressing up as Rasta's if people don't black up but get dressed up?

I do get what you're saying here, but there are always going to be ones who take it too far and cross that line of being offensive either intentionally or not so, especially on such a sensitive issue as race. That's why it's a stupid idea for the club to endorse an idea that could get out of hand. All for dressing up, supporting the team etc. but having attention drawn to us when we've already had a shocking season by now leaving ourselves open to comment from "kick it out" etc is very short sighted. It is just a poor choice and could ruin what should hopefully be a good day out if we stay up and allow people to enjoy the day.

That would be fine, if not entirely funny. But you just know some idiots will "black up" regardless of what people say. And they will most likely be the idiots who get pissed up and cause chew.

As Chip said imagine if this has been suggested for Charlton a few seasons back. You'd have to be mental to attempt it down London. Just because it's Carlisle doesn't make it any less offensive, it just means you're not likely to get stabbed in Carlisle due to it.

This is an ill-thought out idea and will quite possibly draw unnecessary negative attention to an event that has generally served the club well in recent seasons for positive publicity.

Their getting dressed up as bob marley their is no offence to be had in that. Are west Indians in Jamaica going to be offended by this? They would probably laugh at the tv when they see it knowing a couple hundred people on the other side of the world are doing it. If people want to go to Carlisle to be racist they don't need to dress up for it. I've never seen people in Carlisle burning Hartlepool flags cos we call them sheepshaggers

As has been said, google "blacking up offensive" and have a read.

They do find it offensive.

I don't think it's particularly offensive or at all racist. It isn't suggesting people black up is it? Do you need to paint your face to dress like Bob Marley? It's about as left field as you can get as themes go though, I think it was chosen in association with glue bags.

The whole thing is just massively bizarre considering the context of the game though, utterly cringeworthy and embarrassing. The club have never announced the theme in previous years even when people have been asking what it is and we've had nothing whatsoever to play for, so why not have a bit of fun. This is pontentially going to be the most gut wrenchingly horrible day in the clubs history and they have announced this officially as if it's something we should give a fuck about.

I don't particularly find it offensive, and ultimately the reasons behind the costume choice I have no doubt whatsoever were ever intended to be offensive or racist. But plenty of people out there will see it that way, rightly or wrongly.

We're providing people with a stick to beat us with should a significant amount of people decide to "black up". Remember, we do actually receive a fair bit of national attention on our last away game dress ups, so people will notice.

As I've said, nothing wrong with the reggae theme, I just don't trust a decent amount of our supporters not to paint their faces.

Also potentially three of the lads who could be on the pitch trying to keep us up are black. I'm not sure having lads supporting them in the away end 'blacked up' is the best way to go.

I can't believe the potential embarrassment in this hasn't been spotted.

I've never really had a problem with the whole dressing up carry on, until now. And it has nothing at all to do with the theme.
There's a very real chance Pools will drop out of the football league that day, perhaps never to be seen again. And yet a not insignificant number of our fans want to go in fancy dress and have a laugh. I don't see what's funny.
"They want their bloody legs lashing", as my nana used to say.

Nobody who is white is going to get offended about someone blacking up its impossible to be, but clearly some black people are offended by this.

Do you know how the lads who are black who play for Pools feel about it? I don't but would be interested to find out.

Precisely, it is utterly bizzare and a whole new level of bizarre the fact the club are endorsing it. It's like they are trying to wave a shiny light in the face of idiots to distract them from the fact we might get relegated.

What about going dressed as .....POOLS SUPPORTERS... ffs something as important or possibly disastrous as this match makes fancy fooking dress an utter irrelevance....... give the choreographers a chance and they'll be organising a proms type event for the fan who arrives in the most outragrous vehicle.
Cancel it and get behind the team !

Without doubt the daftest idea I have ever seen. Crazy.

Another reason I now have to keep my football alligencies secret when travelling round the country.

Thankyou super fans of the FDE.

And as for the official site. Just another reason why the cockends running this club need to go.

I will go in my pools top like every single game and I bet I stand as much chance of getting beat up in it walking from the train station than bob friggin marly Shaun the sheep or dressed as a jock.

I personally think it's a crap idea and will hope to be dressed wearing my shorts and pools top if it's a sunny day but I'm amazed at how over the top some people have went on over here. Nobody from what I know of has mentioned even painting their faces. A few on here have just presumed it. If a couple of idiots happen to do that then maybe the Carlisle stewards or even police would turn these people away from the ground before entry? At least you would hope. I think some of you really need to get a grip or smoke a spliff. Get dressed up. Don't get dressed up. Just thank god we arnt in a relegation dogfight in desperate need of results or I can't imagine the chaos.

I think personally its agood thing, people often felt left out as it was a closely guarded secret and only a select few could join in. This year they announce it so more could join in and I would presume gain more publicity.

Fair play for that in my opinion, however the theme choice is just asking for trouble although the club announcing their stand on "blacking up" could avoid a lot of hassle as sounds like the journalists are already on the case.

I think the point is people are creating hysteria when theres nothing to create. Get out have a pint lets win a game of football who gives a flying fuck what people dress as. If there shouting racist abuse or whatever then they will be dealt with. The clubs happy to go along with it so let them get on with it I'm more bothered that we stay up.

Nobody is getting hysterical.

Just merely pointing out how embarrassing it is, and how it could create a shitload of bad publicity.

Jesus wept there are thousands of themes they could have chosen.

It seems those getting most hysterical are the ones moaning about our pointing out these things.
