Jailed for six years in 2004, after a fatal car crash, when he legged it until he got the booze and drugs out of his system

Set to join Oldham, when he is released from prison in August.

So is it 2010 already, still I'm sure it's some solace to te family of the people he killed that he behaved himself and got a job lined up.......

Three years for killing a man full of drink and drugs and not even having the guts to stay at the scene, shocking. Even worse that Oldham Atheltic are prepered to give him a contract while he is still inside. Ok when he's served his time most people deserve a second chance and all that but surely this immoral of behalf of the football club to do this while he's still serving his so called punishment?

He would we feel if he was signing for Pools? I'm not sure.....

It'll be interesting to see what his ball control is like with an ankle tag on.

Think we better keep quiet on this one and not claim the moral high ground. Or are you just a newbie on the poolie scene?

His actions were equally as bad, but Bob Newton didnt run away and leave the scene, did he and try to deny his actions?

I have to admit that Bob Newton is way before my time. What happened?

Bob Newton was in a crash with Dave Wiggett another pools player, their car crashed at the Travellers rest, into a bollard I think. Dave was killed, they were both pissed up, Bob was driving but if i'm correct,. forgive me if i'm not, they were both flung from the car and when the police investigated the crash Bob told the police that dave was driving at the time.

Anyway, the truth came out and Bob Newton was given 6 months in the clink.

Four years before I was born, but I was aware of the Bob Newton crash, and the fact he had done time. Obviously it didn't come to mind while posting.

What was the general consensus of the Pools fans at the time, did most back the club sticking by Newton? Hughes crime was 'worse' as well in my opinion. Although Dave Wiggetts family might not feel the same obviously.

I think at the time we were that pap we'd have had the Yorkshire Ripper playing for us if he'd had been allowed out on a licence on a saturday.

I think the general concensus at the time of the crash was one of shock, he was one of our better players at the time if not he best and from what I can remember he did get a decent reception when he came back before being sold onto Chesterfield I think.
