...been reading up on this former Pools Manager. He was only in charge at Pools for 4 months in 1965, succeeded by the late great Brian Clough. He later was invited to become Chief Scout at Liverpool by Bill Shankly, and was credited with discovering big names such as Ian Rush, Phil Neal and Alan Hansen.
Interestingly his first match in charge at the Vic in the 1965/66 season he gave debuts to Ernie Pythian and Jimmy Mulvaney, who both scored and went on to have prolific records with us.
The front four in that game v Southport, a 3-1 win, were:- 8) Amby Fogarty 25 goals in 138 games, 9) Peter Thompson 61 in 145, 10) Ernie Pythian 55 in 135, 11) Jimmy Mulvaney 33 in 72.
That was a potent forward line,
the guy obviously had an eye for a good player. clappp

And he was a good speller too!

I still chuckle at the number of times you'd hear non-initiated Poolies saying stuff like "that Ernie Python scored again I see".

He was the player who gave the "At Last the 1948 Show" crew the idea for Monty Phythian's Flying Circus.

I remember a pic in the Mail of Geoff Twentyman on his arrival from Carlisle (I think) with his family, in an old Ford Popular or something equally naff, and being sorry for him four months later when he was sacked. Having probably watched all his home matches, I don't remember thinking it was the wrong decision, though.

Couldn't imagine a new league manager arriving in something equivalent to a Ford Fiesta these days (though the Ford Pop was more like a motorised pram than a Fiesta!)

Well, I believe 20man followed on from Alvin Williams, who sort of did all right compared with his predecessors.
After we missed the cut when they regrouped Divs 3 N&S into Divs 3 & 4, we were perpetually in the bottom 4. Six re-elections in a row I believe.
Then Alvin Williams took us out of that zone and left us with a team that stayed out and even eventually got promoted.

20man was brought in to replace him when he left for whatever reason (probably because he cound't stand Ernie Ord), but I don't think the appointment was ever intended to be permanent. I don't think he even wanted it to be. Correct me if I'm wrong.

I always thought it was pronounced 'effy-on', but I met him once and he said it is 'eye-fyan'.
