He won't get much service with Sweeney in midfield

about on level with service our midfield provides.

just another example of just how poor we are ran; another player we should have had signed up whilst on loan....still our league top scorer with 4 and he's now going to be playing for a rival if you still think we can stay up

I forgot all about him. I'm presuming they Have Sussed on by now that playing him simply means the opposition run through your midfield at will?

I heard his name mentioned on the football league show the weekend when the Carlisle game was on. Not sure if he starts or not.

I think I did too, "Tony Sweeney has covered 40 miles within 90 minutes without registering a single touch of the ball"

Correct they didn't. But both were piss poor when playing before they left. It doesn't matter if they now playing for a better side. Humphreys did well when he left us but sweeney has went and signed for another team which is also shit, albeit less shit than us

I cant, recall Sweeney ever making a strong tackle sctatchinghead he just seemed to run around a lot but never where the ball was except when he was around the box and when he scored.

They both played their part in the good times, but also the demise of the club started in the last 4/5 years by not letting these players go when we should have.

Selective memories regarding Sweeney I reckon, it's only in the last couple of years with us games started bypassing him. He was a dependable performer for years, not that long ago winning player of the season and turning down Huddersfield to stay at Pools.

It's so sad that the last few seasons have altered people's perceptions so negatively.

I'm waiting for a thread in which someone bangs on about how shit in the air they think Joel Porter was, or how Dimi rarely saved penalties.

Sweeney has been playing recently but more out of necessity than intent. He started under Kav and scored a couple of goals. He was then relegated to the bench when Curle came in but since Gary Dicker's been out injured he found himself back in the side. For a while he was conspicuously poor in the centre of a midfield with no defensive instinct... then he was moved out left where he did marginally better (or at least was unable to let the ball past him in dangerous situations). We needed more cover for our back line so we brought in Anthony Griffith as well as having centre-back Courtney Meppen-Walter step up to a defensive midfield role. Since then we've been playing with two defensively-minded midfielders behind him, two attacking midfielders either side of him, and a target man in front of him... he's practically playing as a forward now and has been doing rather well in that position bombing forward.

As I write this the commentators on BBCRC just described him as playing in the Tim Cahill role after he headed just wide of goal.

The trouble was he needed the team picking around him with him playing as a headless chicken behind the front man.

This was always the case he had a good spell when tinkler carried him in a mf 2, just shows you how good tinks was.

It's true though isn't it. He couldn't play in a 442 the midfield would be too week. Best form since Cardiff always been when Wandsworth set the team up around him

Tinks was tremendous but that's hugely unfair to Sweeney. Whatever his limitations there was way more to Sweeney than "a good spell" for which you give another player the credit. He was a very important player for us during some successful times for the club.

Sweeney couldn't tackle, pass or tap the ball. I think he was very lucky to come through when he did, as he palpably couldn't play in a midfield 2. So without Tinkler doing his donkey work he wouldn't of been able to shine. If you built the team round him he was decent as an attacking midfielder bursting into the box.

I quite like the fella and always gave 100% but I think thats a fair analysis of his career at Pools.

We pretty much did build a team around him though. He easily played more games and more minutes in the 2004-2005 season than any other player except Humps, and that difference was only due to missing time though a red card.
Was Tinkler carrying Humphreys too? He'd have a job seeing he played twenty games less than those two, and that he finished the season playing central defender.

And that's coming from one of Tinkler's biggest fans.

I liked Sweeney he had some great seasons for us. Loved this club and never hid. A good honest pro. I'm baffled by the extreme negativity when I think of the dross we have endured it seems he is being lumped in that category and that for me is way off beam.

His last 3 seasons or so here he was average.

He stayed too long, like many others.

Definitely stayed too long but prior to that was a regular starter in the best Pools sides in the history of the club.
