Right, we've done the 'why won't strikers come to Hartlepool' thing, the 'who makes the best kebab ever' thing and even the 'who is the daftest poster' thing, now it's The Original Bunker Book Quiz.

Below are 5 extracts from poems or short stories. If you guess the author, one point; if you guess author and work, 2 points.
Winner gets picked for the team next week, as punishment for showing off.

1. One on the top of the other the rest of the company followed the Ablewhites, till we had the whole tale of them complete. Including the family, they were twenty-four in all. It was a noble sight to see, when they were settled in their places round the dinner table, and the Rector of Frizinghall (with beautiful elocution) rose and said grace.
There is no need to worry you with a list of the guests. You will meet none of them a second time – in my part of the story at any rate - with the exception of two.

2. He couldn’t find her again in the Allied officers’ night club that evening or in the sweltering, burnished, hedonistic bedlam of the black-market restaurant with its vast bobbing wooden trays of elegant food and its chirping flock of bright and lovely girls. He couldn’t even find the restaurant. When he went to bed alone, he dodged flak over Bologna again in a dream…..

3. The Stones lived across the hall from the Millers. Jim was a salesman for a machine-parts firm and often managed to combine business with pleasure trips, and on this occasion the Stones would be away for ten days, first to Cheyenne, then on to St Louis to visit relatives. In their absence, the Millers would look after the Stones’ apartment, feed Kitty and water the plants.

4. In his excitement Timothy had kicked aside his rug and had sat up in his chair. There were no signs of weakness or fragility about him. He looked, Mr Entwhistle thought, a perfectly healthy man, even if a slightly excitable one. Moreover the old lawyer realised very clearly that Timothy Abernethie had probably always been jealous of his brother Richard.

5. In my younger and more vulnerable years my father gave me some advice that I’ve been turning over in my mind ever since.
“When you feel like criticising anyone,” he told me, “just remember that all the people in the world haven’t had the advantages you’ve had.”
He didn’t say any more…..

No 1 is The Moonstone, WIlkie Collins.
The first detective novel and a great read. The story is told by several narrators - the best being Gabriel Betteredge, a faithful, old servant.

Well done all.
I agree, KT. Has 'Neighbours' really been filmed, andy? I didn't know of any Carver films.

Spender, old fruit, who is Wilikie Collins? Is he any relation to Sam?
