May 17th 1943. RAF No 617 squadron attacked German dams in Operation Chastise using specialised 'bouncing bombs'.

While not as successful as was hoped in the actual intended outcome (full water output had been restored by 27th June along with the electrical grid being back up to capacity), it did put a huge dent in German food production due to the loss of land and farm animals. It also proved to be a pretty good morale booster for the Allies! It also helped show the American military and Soviets that we could be a force to be reckoned with.

Peter Jackson is making a re-make of the 1954 Dam Busters film. Stephen Fry is apparently writing the script, so it should be good

Re-makes are bollocks....look at the Italian job. If it's are-make it'll have to appeal to American audiences so we'll have Hugh Grant as Guy Gibson, there'll be the inevitable romantic angle, the compulsory gay character, and Barnes Wallis will be replaced by a lesbian aero engineer called Belinda. There'll be no question of using bouncing bombs, they'll be replaced by leaflets explaining the futility of war.... his labrador will be replaced by an endangered species ... a panda or a dolphin and let's not forget the cute little kid........

Not as funny as the fact that the entire cast, the panda/dolphin included, will be Jewish, already.....   Guy Gibsonberg......and the dog will actually be called Meschugginah......and the sing song round the piano will feature Barry Manilow, Barbra Streisand and Bette Midler singing 'If I Was A Rich Man.....'

i once worked in an old ladies house opposite franklands prison in durham (ramshackle of a house had no running water before we turned up, but its worth a fortune because of its location) and the lady was as mental as anything she pulled a shotgun on the builder once doing the repairs to the house.

well to cut a long story short the woman swore blind her husband was one of the co-ordinators of the dam buster raids

we did have a fright one day on that job whilst hunting around in the growth outside looking for a stop tap. an old nissan cherry or datsun type car pulled up conversation went a bit like this

'what you doing lads'

'f00k all to do with you'

'guns appear, erm we got high risk prisoners going out of here on trial'

'oh right erm i'll just wipe me legs with dog leafs, erm just finding the stop tap officer'

'ok, bye'

next thing we saw was a bloody convoy going out of the jail, bikes, vans, cars escorting them terrorists who done that explosion at south shields confised ( i might be wrong with the location, but it was when the paddies blew something up around here)
