I have just posted an article on Pools legend Alan Goad. I managed to go through some of his old scrapbooks and pull out a few good pics. I will be posting an interview with Alan in the next few weeks.

Do you have any questions that you would like to ask Alan for the interview?

Here is the link:

Great stuff, some "never seen" photos in there. Goady was a BIG hero of mine as a kid, and that 1971 line up on the article is my first memories of Pools..Ralph Wright, Peter Barlow, Goady, Tony Birky etc....

I'm guessing that the Pele shirt must have come from Ralph Wright.

I just washed my pale blue 1974 Hartlepool FC duffle bag. It's now drip drying in the bath.

Good stuff Mr Goady. clappp

I'd be interested to know his memories of the Clough/Taylor era and how he rated Tony Parry if you could get those questions into your interview.

Hey guys,

Thanks for the nice comments. If you leave comments and questions in the article on 3D Sports Media I will get Alan to log-in and post his own responses.

We are trying to convince Alan to come back to Hartlepool in 5 years time to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of Hartlepool first getting promoted. Do any of you know if there are plans for this? If not, could I be of any help to try and get some of the old players back to the vic for a night of celebration.

We are also looking to do a limited run of articles and programmes from Alan's old scrapbooks and frame and sign them to give the money to a local Hartlepool charity. Hopefully we can find someone at the club or Hartlepool Mail to help get this off the ground.

Paul

@Mr Irrelevant

I'll find out more information on the Pele shirt. One of the other shirts Alan received was Terry Yorath's Wales International Jersey. Alan ended up his playing career playing with Terry Yorath with the Vancouver Whitecaps.

Goad was one of my favourite players, an unsung hero who just seemed to glide through games with the minimum of fuss. Remember the testimonial v Forest, think he scored the equaliser, must of been a set up, cos he hardly ever scored. Remember him playing up front towards the end of his time at pools, it was either that or play the chairman, the squad was that thin. Didn't he run the Square Ring pub for a while? ( no it wasn't a gay pub )

Love the article and pictures I even remember the white painting of the stone brick wall just behind goal at both ends in I believe the second season after we got rid of the corrugated iron perimeter fencing.

I do not remember Goad much maybe as he never made howlers, but I do recall the papers saying in about 1976 pools 2 Darlo 0 and a rare Zgoal for Alan that Darlo were goaded into defeat!!!!!

@Horden Yes, I grew up in the Square Ring pub while we ere in Hartlepool. Certainly turned out to be a rough part of town from what I heard.

I had a signed copy of his testimonial programme. The front cover had a picture of Alan and his family at home (I think) - but I've since lost it along with loads of other stuff after I left home

I wouldn't care, I only went to the shops

I can put you in touch with Ralph Wright if you like. Ralph was captain of NYC when Pele played for them, hence my guess on the shirt.

It's not a bad claim to fame is it? 'I captained a Brazil player before they were shite'

Watling, Potter, Goad, Dawes...... etc. It kind of rolled of the tongue in those days.

Saw Goady play many times in the 70s - the sort of no-nonsense player we specialised in for many years. A mate of mine once said he played against him on the Rec and Goady kicked him up in the air at every opportunity!

Another favourite player of mine John Rowlands also played in the states in the 70s, also for New York Cosmos I think...

The side between 73-75 could and should of done a lot better. Just one player and a bit of belief and promotion could of been achieved. Len Ashurst played at Sunderland in the late 60s when Sunderland had a good youth team. Players like Moore,Mcmahon,Gauden, Shoulder played for them and followed Ashurst to pools. Really liked Gauden, yet not much mentioned about him when talking about pools history. Some great games in that period, the cup run 74/75, Lincoln at home in FA CUP 2 in 1974, it should of been double figures not 0-0, battered them, a bizarre 4-3 last game of season v Barnsley in 1975, the sunday games due to my dad holding the country to ransom again in 1974, happy days

I agree they were an almost team. Gauden was good and scored well. He played cricket for Langley Park

I went to the first sunday game with me Dad. 5 - 0 v Stockport with 5,500 at the Vic I seem to remember.

I was a ballboy when Ralph Wright was a Pools player, hence my appreciation of his white boots. A rare thing in those days, especially in the lower echelons. Only the likes of Alan Ball etc wore them then.
I also remember Alan Goad's testimonial. A cold night at the Vic with maybe 2500 there. Forest brought a few up and there was the usual post match agro. Yes it was the seventies after all! :-D

3500, after about 20 mins a little firm of forest numbering about 20 lads in their early to mid 20s and carrying a union jack walked around from the Town End onto the Mill House terrace, their intention I think was to go as far as the Rink End and possibly take it. I was stood were I stand now, Mill House terrace nearest to the Town End, a few seemed hesitant, remember their ringleader saying to them in notts accent " its alreet come ont lads, theer only 4th division club". They got as far as the old tunnel, when around 40 Hartlepool attacked them from all sides, legend has it carried on around the back of the Mill House, which in them days was the black hole of Calcutta, they got battered. I do hope a few of them were Notts miners.

I got wellied up the backside off a copper after the match. It still stung the day after. The days when coppers could give you a welly.
Interestingly enough a couple of years later after a feisty away game at Barnsley, got dragged behind the stand by a friendly South Yorkshire copper, where he conveniently placed me in a headlock, and for his entertainment proceeded to bray fuck out of my skull. Again in those days you thought, take it and eventually he'll let you go free.
No, he arrested me for assaulting a police officer. Locked up for 2 days. Straight in court Monday morning and got a £200 fine after pleading guilty to a lesser charge of breach of the peace. This was in 1979!!! The days when you pleaded guilty because it would cost you more money in lost work time, travel expenses etc.
God knows what I would have got if i'd broke the law!!!! banghead :angry-screaming:

a few of them got dispatched rather swiftly by a well known town boxer

I was stood with you that night Ron, in the Millhouse Terrace, we were talking to the said Forest fans, one of which who was very tall, and I remember trying to convince them that their idea of taking the Rink End was illfounded when a group of Donkey jacket clad Rinkenders trotted up and without any introduction basically wiped the floor with them. I actually felt sorry for them. The Rink End in those days was no place for the faint-hearted.
