Usually when I stop over I use the Travel Inn on the Marina on the basis that they are fairly cheap, clean and functional. I've just tried to book up for Tuesday night and the price has gone up to £55 a night - this for a double room. Add to that its about a tenner each for a decent breakfast and suddenly its £75 a night.

The Grand hotel is £65 including breakfast and parking. I know its used to be a bit tired but they've done it up a bit and the breakfast is fantastic.

Anyone know anything about the 'York Hotel' ? It had better be good at £130 a night!!!

was misled by the web-site and ETB four star rating - which seems to be an abberation. I believe the discerning traveller will read between the lines of the other reviews. There are many shortcomings but if free internet access is your only concern this hotel may suit, as it appears to provide it. Otherwise, if you need to stay in Hartlepool, the Premier Travel Inn on the Quayside is far superior in every way - and also cheaper for two.

Twice as much as the Grand

Stopped there a couple of years ago and was less than impressed. The rooms are fine and the hotels ok but the Noise from the bars both below and around is horrific.

It'll be nice and quiet on a Tuesday tho Mr I, there's only Junctions bar open, not the nightclubby/bar bits.

I stayed at the Hillcarter for the first time on Saturday. Rooms were OK, but the stairwell smelt of vomit and I had to step over a comatose body on the way back to my room.

I've stoppe in the hillcarter before, I thought it was ok but the stairs stunk more of piss when I stayed there. At least they give you a good breakfast up the top and include it in the price......

Why don't you try the formula one on the a19 - I've heard good reports of that place.... rolfl

The York Hotel is a very backwards hotel, the woman who owns it isn't very pleasant either. You get a list of all the 'fines' they impose on you if things are dirty etc. Wouldn't recommend.

so where are Trading Standards people in this town? If we're trying to attract people to the town for visits etc, only for them not to come back because hotels aren't up to scratch, then they'll be wondering why folks stop coming!!!!
I know that places like Bournemouth are very strict in the granting of licenses/permits etc for hoteliers and how the star ratings are scored - I know we aren't at that kind of standard for tourism, but surely there has to be a minimum acceptable standard???
