If you were around for Punk, then you invariably got a bit of Reggae thrown in as bands like The Clash and Stiff Little Fingers were very influenced by it and indeed covered the odd track and used to have Reggae support acts or DJ's around them. Chuck in very decent Reggae-style 45's by The Ruts, Costello, The Members etc and you can see why it got into peoples heads.

What I really didn't get (and get even less now its a Revival-Of-A-Revival) was the plethora of Third Division Mod acts that appeared around 79-80 like The Lambrettas, Secret Affair etc. Talk about jumping someone elses train.... The Jam were OK in 77 and 78 but really grated on me from 79 onwards.

I'd rather listen to "1977" by Ash than any U2 album after "War".

Great band, blistering live, up there with the best live bands I've seen.

Their last album was probably my favourite LP of last year. "The Man Who.." is chock full of great songs, and they put out a non-album Single called "The Distance" a few years ago that is simply stunning, one of my all-time favourite songs by any band. Sold fuck-all either.

Agree on that one. Dave Grohl is a clever guy, and very derivative, BUT, he's got the brand. Weller was the same...just nick the best elements of what's around. The undisputed kings of this were Led Zeppelin. Just go on YouTube and search for Led Zep Rip-Offs and see just how little of their first three "classic" albums were their own work....

I dunno....he's another I haven't really listened to....infact I can only name 1 song of 'his'!!!! confised

I enjoyed him on Roy Orbison's 'Black & White' though!!!!

See, I never used to get Springsteen until I watched the Seeger sessions, which convinced me to look a bit deeper into his back catalogue. Now I totally get him (although like every other singer or band he still has plenty of ungettable songs). His original version of Blinded by the Light and Manfred Mann's are like two totally different songs and both are excellent.

BUT

In Black and White he simply had to poke his nose into everything, and it was often incongruous. It was like Bruce Springsteen's Black & White Nite with special guest Roy Orbison.

The Beatles take some beating for me. The most overrated band in the history of this or any other planet.

They are the 'One Direction' of the sixties made out to be by their fawners to be more important than penicillin.
They sold a lot of record, well whoppedo! So did the Wombles and Shuddupyaface.
He said yeah, yeah, yeah, she said yeah, yeah, yeah, they said yeah, yeah, yeah, he said yeah, yeah, yeah, she said yeah, yeah, yeah. [repeat ad infinitum] trite nonsense typical of them
Ohbladi ohblada life goes on. What the fuck is that all about?

For Brian Espstein c1960's read Simon Cowell c2000's.

The Travelling Wilburys. A"Supergroup" who on paper should have been the best band around. Full of THE great/talented, singers/songwriters/ musicians of the era. For me though their music was well just okay. Nothing remerberable or remarkable IMO. Maybe it was me expecting too much, I don't know. I really really want to like them, but there is just something I obviously don't "get".

Then you are thick.

One Direction havent written a single song, or played a single note on any of their recorded history.

Lets rip Mr I's tall tale apart...

He takes two examples from the 268 recorded/released Beatles tracks (including Anthologies).

"She Loves You", their 4th single, from within the first year of their career, then "Ob La Di Ob La Da" from the fag end of it, a "filler" track on the double White Album from late 1968.

In between the two, we get...
With The Beatles
Beatles For Sale
A Hard Days Night
Help
Rubber Soul
Revolver
Sgt Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band
The rest of The White Album minus the "fun" Ob La Di and the frankly awful Revolution #9

Do me a favour, you are making yourselves look daft with the One Direction stuff...

Kasabian. I have no idea how they got out of playing pubs, complete anthems-by-numbers for chavs. I get Oasis (although not a fan), I understand why they got to the size that they did, they made some really catchy songs.
But despite repeated listens, and really trying to like them, I've never found a single redeeming feature of any Kasabian song.

And they are ugly, it's not as if their looks made up for their lack of creativity or ability to write a good song.

Never got the appeal of the Chili Peppers. I'm not sure about not "getting" it but the success of countless generic guitar bands producing formulaic indie slop is a little depressing. Reverand and the enemy, courteeners of leon, stuff like that. Just dull beyond belief.

I seen Kasabian live a few years ago when they were supporting Oasis in Manchester... They were absolutely superb, one of the best bands I've ever seen live.

Kasabian are superb live, and have had some brilliant songs.

Its just the usual music snobbery on here. Remember you have to love The Fall to be anybody.

That doesn't surprise me. Looking at your favourites is like imagining what the playlist would be in purgatory. For me it's the same tired format being photocopied by different faces, but I reckon you would hate my own music collection too, with not a lot of crossover. We all have our own soundtrack and each one is brilliant.

Aye exactly, each to their own

Thought they were on par with Oasis that night, luckily The Enemy dropped out due to sickness so it was just Twisted Wheel, Reverend and the Makers, Kasabian and Oasis. The power cut out during Rock n Roll star and Oasis were off stage for about 45 mins, when it came back on Liam rolled back on stage and offered everyone a refund.... Still waiting to this day!

I actually like the bands I have suggested... but I put them up as obscure, because they are all a very acquired taste!!

And I could see why not many folks would take to them or listen to them!!!
