had this been worded "Best Solo Artist" it would have been a close run thing. Probably still TW but I would love to see Shannon Wright live again soon.

I've tried and tried to 'get into' Tom Waits and I just can't....the same goes for Elvis Costello (sorry Mr.Glasses) and The Fall and Biffy Clyro!!!! confised

If he's not Leonard Cohen's unseparated conjoined twin, he goes to a new thread. :naughty:

I once overheard an old woman in Pennywise on York Road refer to her as 'Urethra Franking' which made me nearly lose control of my bladder.

Shirley Bassey

Seriously.

That was easy, but best male singer would be impossible to choose.

How about famed geordie lunatic Wavis O' Shave, who's real name is Rod Stewart (apparently). He later became Foffo Spearjig, but it's his days as O'Shave that I'll always remember, the haunting melodies of Mauve Shoes, Jeremy's A Pansy, Anna Ford's Bum, Sid Is Dead and Denis Smokes Tabs. There were rumours in the 80's that he had died after eating a mercury omelette, but these were thankfully without foundation. A true nutter, he recently had his autobigraphy, "Felt Nowt...The Wavis O'Shave Story" published, I believe you can read it on his website, I'm sure it will be destined to become hailed as one of the greatest literary works of all time.

Great shout. Saw him live a good few years ago now and he was sublime. Probably one of my favourite gigs.

I'd say Sufjan Stevens (but not a great fan of his newer stuff).

Singer - Roy Orbison.

Cohen, Costello, Dylan, Lou Reed and my own personal fave, Richard Thompson, are all brilliant singer/songwriters, but their singing voices are acquired tastes! Roy's the man.

I was at his concert in the Flann O'Brien pub in Paris in 1998-ish, with an audience of about 70 max (James McIntyre the pub owner had a very persuasive streak).
The sound was perfection.

That's about as good as a folk gig ever gets.

I wouldn't want to listen to him all the time though.

John Martyn is just begging to be tacked on to the end of that list.
